丽江鸟瞰（机瞰）
Lijiang is one of these few places in China where the air is still fresh and water still clear, because they don't rely on industries I guess.

Kevin and all, I have not visited enough places in China to have a convincing opinion but if we are talking about a "Retired Translators Village", get away from Hangzhou and Shanghai as far as you can.

Your pictures of Shanghai and Macau are very well photographed in terms of both composition and exposure. The ones at night time are especially difficult for digital cameras but yours are handled very well. If you did not use a tripod for these, you have very steady hands.
The 1st two images (the Russian Orthodox church and the fireworks at the Bund) are enough to tell that you know the tricks of composition. Your childhood house reminds me of the buildings along 淮海西路, near the Music Conservantoire 东湖路? 富民路? where I had my first "Western style meal" at the "天鹅阁西餐厅"late in the 1970s, (where I ordered "乡下浓汤" with a plate of fried fish). I am wondering if it is still there.

I wasn't reminded of it at all, though, until I saw wherestip's post, and the memories of the day came back in an instance. I think the first few hours when there wasn't much information to go around were the most harrowing, as we only knew that there were a few explosions in the Tube but we had no idea of the extent and the cause... everyone was busy calling their friends/relatives in London and making sure that everybody was safe. Thank you for being so positive and a supporter to my retirement plan! Your feedback did make me think twice. As a visitor, I always go to the places at the best season, and never had the opportunity to suffer with the locals the worst part of a year. Having living comfortably in the cooler zones all my life, I do not handle hot weather and humidity well. Because I enjoy Internet so much, I cannot imagine if I could survive if I have to live somewhere too remote to the civilization and plan my daily activities by daylight. My adaptation capability seems decreasing when my age is increasing.
By watching CCTV, Dalian looks very attractive to me. I visited Dalian once many years ago with an American delegation. It was in Dalian where I first time tried "sea urchin" (海胆) on the fancy dinner table. I never knew it was eatable. I think I can get used to the local dialect in a short time.
I do not expect a whole lot from this retirement plan, just make sure you and I can organize 7 translator families, such as you and PK, who can cook well, so I can drop by each family for free meals one day a week. By doing so, my rest life will be well taken care of. Just a thought.

I should have said:
"...you are welcome to share with me whatever is on the table."
or at least "...whatever I am having for food." I would be glad to share whatever I have. If I only have one chicken leg left, I will chop it in half, and you can chew the other half, as long as we have Shaoxing wine.
Things like that comes to me as second nature. Although I have been abroad long enough, certain things require a second thought before you can get them correct, grammatically or culturally.
Back to food: for me there is nothing wrong by sharing the same dish with people around your table. But this certainly seems "uncivilized" in the West. Everybody has to pass every dish around and get their portion first before chewing down. The pile of silverware in front of me usually get very little use, except for one fork, and I don't understand why they need three forks and three spoons and a couple of different knives. I am certainly not recommending that to China. Think about all the extra metal that could be wasted if every Chinese city started learning Western culture the way it is here. There is nothing wrong with the chopsticks, and you are lucky your parents taught you how to use them as a child.

I am not sure if I can charge enough from translation to buy all these poles though. One of the ways to make sure you catch something is to increase the number of fish in the water or the number of rods.

This is way too hilarious. I have never seen someone being this crazy to increase his odds of catching the fish. I know most of the fishing rods selling in the outdoor stores in the U.S. are made in China. I have not seen any American guy owns that many fishing rods (30 something?), let alone the fact that everyone here must first purchase the fishing permits. This Chinese guy in the photo will make all the American fishing men look ridiculous. I hope this guy in the photo did catch something that day. It would be very upsetting if he went home empty-handed. By the way, if I were you, I would sell this photo to the fishing magazine. I bet they would love to have it. You can make enough for another trip to China.

但可以知道的是目前魚類資源保育的主流是Catch & Care。紐西蘭、澳洲、加拿大、日本、美國....等都是（除了保育類以外），限制一定的尺寸、一定的數量、一定的季節、一定的釣法、一定的工具（限制魚鉤大小，小魚自然不會上鉤。）...。
Catch & Releaseg是較高的標準！但還是傷害魚類。不釣魚的標準不是更高嗎？但我個人並不想把標準訂那麼高，增加數十個不釣魚的人，跟增加數百個珍惜小心利用魚源的釣友，我寧可選擇後者。
況且標準高與生態保育也不一定有關，適度的利用自然資源才是主流的生態保育觀念。
我們希望政府也能以Catch & Care的精神訂立如前所述的釣魚規章，在珍惜魚類資源下適度的利用。至於何種尺寸才是適當可利用？在政府牛步立法以前，我自己給自己訂下苦花是15公分以下，25公分以上不取。而且只在釣場食用，不帶回家。然而有人認為根本就應釣後放回，有的認為標準過高應是10公分以下...。
南勢溪由於林相完整並無土石流產生。
也許在土石流肆虐的當下還去釣魚作樂，沒有人溺己溺的精神，實在也是道德瑕疵。真是慚愧！
