Catalan term or phrase: interpreting a confusing sentence
I can't get my head around this,.

This is my draft:

The Catalan Statute of Autonomy had been approved not long before (9 September 1932) and, in Menorca, a lively debate was taking place between those keen to join Menorca to Catalunya or wanting the Balearic Islands to be autonomous and those who rejected all notions of autonomy or who preferred a statute of autonomy for the Balearic Islands

Are there errors (i can't seem to make sense of it...)

English translation:The Catalan Statute of Autonomy had been...
Explanation:
The "enfront" seems to suggest something like this:

The Catalan Statute of Autonomy had been approved not long before (9 September 1932), and in Menorca a lively debate was taking place between, on the one hand, advocates of Catalan autonomy (in favour of Menorca joining Catalonia) and those who sought autonomy for Menorca, and, on the other, those who rejected all notions of autonomy or who preferred a statute of autonomy for the Balearic Islands.

On those other hand, I don't see why the first two groups and the second two should be opposed, so I wonder if what's really meant is just this:

The Catalan Statute of Autonomy had been approved not long before (9 September 1932), and in Menorca a lively debate was taking place between advocates of Catalan autonomy (in favour of Menorca joining Catalonia), those who sought autonomy for Menorca, those who rejected all notions of autonomy, and advocates of a statute of autonomy for the Balearic Islands.

Explanation:
That is, Menorca alone, not Menorca WITHIN a Balearic Islands autonomic Government
