I think I am just going to use the normal minus sign (U+2212), i.e.: ‘−’, as I doubt anyone will actually even know what ‘./.’ (as a fallback representation of the commercial minus sign) is supposed to mean.

It seems the author used it in my text because the ‘commercial minus sign’ is only available in a small number of fonts, such as DejaVu Sans + DejaVu Serif. (See: http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/2052/fontsuppor... )

However, I think it should actually have been written as ‘./.’, rather than ‘-/-’ if used as a fallback representation. See e.g.: ‘A common glyph variant and fallback representation looks like ‘‘./.’’’ (http://www.decodeunicode.org/u 2052 )

They use -/- instead of just - because a dash - can be read as from-to. Or to make sure it isn't overlooked or perceived as anything else.
