English term or phrase: literacy
This is a term providing the education level of the parents on an Indian birth certificate.
I understand it's about basic skills but I don't really understand what level it corresponds to in France ?
Thanks a lot

French translation:niveau d'éducation
Explanation:

neutral  Eliza Hall: It sounds to me more like "reading level" than "education level." In other words, their reading/writing skills are at the level of X (a 3rd grader, a high-school graduate, etc.).

agree  B D Finch: In the context of India, given the high level of illiteracy in the population, I think this is not only the usual translation of the term, but also the correct one.
