rouille perforante

Explanation:

Example sentence(s):
  • Reparation rouille perforante - Restaurations - Anciennes

neutral  Tony M: I think it can be 'harmful' long before it is 'perforante' — 'harmless' rust is just surface rust, of no structural importance; whereas 'harmful' implies deeper pitting, weakening the metal — but still not necessarily 'penetrating'.

  -> Yes, you're right. "perforante" may be too specific, actually.

disagree  Daryo: not quite / depending on WHERE is the hole made by the rust it could also be perfectly "harmless", as any MOT tester would confirm it. // see https://www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/en/articles/mot-test-e...

agree  Daryo: makes sense, although if the term is used repeatedly I would add the first time "préjudiciable au bon fonctionnement / à la sécurité du véhicule"

  -> merci.

and have not suffered... harmful rust,
>

disagree  Daryo: this is missing the key point - ANY rust could be seen as "damage" even if it's only a cosmetic damage and the part / device is still perfectly safe to use.
