English term or phrase: layer
Greetings,

When I was at Ulpan Akiva, I was told that there had been several stages or layers (strata?) of the Hebrew language: the language of the Torah, the language of rabbinical Judaism, medieval Hebrew e.g. as in the writing of the Rambam and Modern Hebrew. What is the right word to describe these layers?

Best wishes,

Simon
