English term or phrase: only when/after... because
Hi everyone, another linguistics question: how would you translate "I wake up only when the alarm rings because I am too lazy"? Suppose this is an answer to a "why?" question. Can you say something like:

"Azért csak akkor ébredek fel, amikor csörög a vekker, mert túl lusta vagyok"?

And (provided my sentence is ok), can you do the same with "azután"..."miután"?

Something like: "Azért csak azután ébredek fel, miután csörög a vekker, mert túl lusta vagyok"?

Thanks a lot!

Hi Giorgo,

I hope others would also contribute, and correct me if I am wrong, but I can't see anything wrong your sentences (neither of them). I think you can use both and they are correct.

Explanation:
"Azért csak akkor ébredek fel, amikor csörög a vekker, mert túl lusta vagyok"? This is fine.

"Azért csak azután ébredek fel, miután csörög a vekker, mert túl lusta vagyok." This is not quite right. The meaning of miután is 'because', although it is not being used much in today's Hungarian. Therefore: 'Azért csak azután ébredek fel, hogy csörög a vekker, mert túl lusta vagyok.' Or: 'Csak azután ébredek fel, hogy csörög a vekker, miután túl lusta vagyok.' As you see the 'azért' szó can be omitted, similar to the English. One more alternative: 'Csak a vekker csörgése után ébredek fel, mert túl lusta vagyok.'

Let me reflect on the arguments below. I made a mistake by asserting that 'miután' means because and NOT after, in fact it can mean both. (Simplz, I am not used to using it in the latter meaning.) I also maintain that my last suggestion is a better Hungarian sentence than the rest.

neutral  juvera: I would agree with you, but this is wrong:'Csak azután ébredek fel, hogy csörög a vekker, miután túl lusta vagyok.' The 'miután' should be 'mert', 'mivel'. Alternatíva: "Miután lusta vagyok, csak az után kelek fel, hogy a vekker csörgött."

-> A 'miután' ilyen jelentése a Magyar Szókincstárban tájszóként szerepel. Ha a válasz irásához ezt megnéztem volna, akkor az eredeti mondatot jónak tartottam volna. Csakhogy személyes nyelvtudásomra alapoztam a választ.

neutral  Zsanett Rozendaal-Pandur: Interesting. I think 'miután' _is_ used in present day Hungarian and it can have the meaning Giorgio writes. It's true that it can also mean 'since', sort of. But I see no problem with Giorgio's second sentence. Perhaps a regional difference?

disagree  Levente Bodrossy Dr.: Sorry, Denny, but "miután" means "after" just as well as "because".

Explanation:
You can use this one:

Azért tudok csak vekkercsörgésre felébredni, mert túl lusta vagyok.

OR

Azért nem tudok vekkercsörgés nélkül felébredni, mert túl lusta vagyok.
