Good evening!

I'm trying to figure out a translation on African politics, war and world situation. I'm a French-specialised translator but have been asked to translate from English to Spanish for once and I'm stuck at some stages. For instance:

"The Western Somali Liberation Front (WSLF) was waging a war against the central government seeking federation with its nationality in Somalia, a country which during the period of colonialism was divided by five different states carved out by Italy, Britain, France and Ethiopia".

What would "with its nationality" mean in this context? Is it another way of saying "its compatriots" or "its fellow citizens" or am I taking it the wrong way? Could you pleas help me out?

Así aislado, el párrafo original podría parecer confuso. Se sobreentiende que el WSLF was waging a war contra el gobierno etíope que controlaba la región del Ogaden, de población mayoritaria de habla/etnia somalí. Así, la guerrilla del WSLF en Etiopía buscó el apoyo de sus compatriotas somalíes -y finalmente lo encontró, cuando el gobierno de Somalia decidió invadir el Ogaden, aprovechando la situación de vacío/confusión política en Etiopía (lo que a su vez generaría uno de los más relevantes giros en la política internacional, al suspender el bloque soviético su apoyo militar a Somalia a partir de aquella invasión e iniciar un apoyo abierto a Etiopía).

En este caso, más que connacionales utilizaría probablemente compatriotas de Somalia [somalíes], en alusión a la población / gobierno de la considerada patria madre del WSLF. Its nationality en este caso creo que alude a esa misma idea de homeland. La diferencia entre connacional y compatriota en castellano resulta en todo caso sutil -y discutible- pero en el caso aludido me parece referencia más natural la traducción como compatriotas;

Nación: territorio en que habitan personas con origen, costumbres, cultura común. Un país puede tener varias nacionalidades; por ejemplo Bolivia se declara plurinacional.
Patria: Tierra natal o adoptiva ordenada como nación, a la que se siente ligado el ser humano por vínculos jurídicos, históricos y afectivos. Se puede tener más de una patria.

La apelación del WSLF diría efectivamente ligada a su patria más que exclusivamente a su nación, entendida está última tanto como espacio limitado (que los excluiría) o como etnia (que los limitaría). Claro que entiendo en este caso el concepto original de nationality incluyendo su sentido amplio de homeland nationality antes que solamente en su sentido más excluyente relativo a una nacionalidad/etnia específica (si bien mayoritaria) en Somalia -lo cual resulta, como ya comentado, discutible.

Entiendo en cualquier caso que la opción más <segura> aquí es la traducción más literal como connacionales, motivo de mi agree a Robin. Además, la apelación a its nationality in Somalia parece querer sugerir una apelación también étnica.
Me parece no obstante que compatriota no excluye este sentido étnico e incluye un matiz más humano, menos frío, técnico o burocrático en castellano que connacional, encajando así (creo) mejor en el contexto dado, motivo por el que planteo la alternativa.
