@Jose This is not a word I made up or heard randomly while walking down the street. It is widely (and correctly) used in the US and I know it first hand from my own college years. The fact that there are other variations, or that it is not used in your neck of the woods does not make it incorrect.

In the meantime: 1) I haven't posted an answer because I agree with that given by Lydia. 2) I did not say, infer or otherwise imply that, I quote: ""sororities" is a word the average UK English user can understand" (actually, I implied the exact opposite, as Lydia well understood). 3) I do speak, and translate into, Spanish so what's your point?. 4) I am 'forcing' nothing on no-one. 5) What's 'dubious' about 'sororidades'? - Nowt! On the contrary, it reflects the classic language of the convent which is, I suggest, rather appropriate in Asker's context.
I'd like to see you comment on my note referring to 'intramural and varsity sports' - this might, perhaps, be more helpful to Asker.

Mediatrix, with all respect, I don't understand your contribution, what is your translation or your particular point, are you really up for using "sororidades" because you say "sororities" is a word the average UK English user can understand? I think we should use and promote the language we speak or translate into, the only issue here is whether the Spanish speaking target audience will understand and whether you may be forcing on them a term of dubious origin.

@Asker You've posted a source text and a translation of it. So, what's your problem?
From what I read there, your problem is not with 'fraternities, sororities', but with 'intramural and varsity sports', for which your translation 'torneos deportivos dentro de la universidad' is most certainly not correct.
