rocky layers Explanation: Is what comes to mind, but then you have "étagés" to deal with, which you have not included in your question. + Something based on shelves? Running out of words for levels and layers! |

Rocky ledged Explanation: To my mind this could apply to natural or man-made features -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 4 minutes (2021-03-18 14:45:50 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- LEDGES !! Sorry -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 14 mins (2021-03-18 14:56:03 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- So perhaps STRATA? -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 16 mins (2021-03-18 14:58:21 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- And 'a series ofc might convey the idea of superimposed layers? |

Rock levels Explanation: I know you do not want to use Level or Levels too often but this is what comes to mind. Or, as ormiston proposed, Strata. A ledge would be as in step or level. |

paliers rocheux étagés tiered (or stepped) rocky strata Explanation: I've added étagés as it's part of the collocation Archaeologists deal in stratigraphy, a word already in the sentence in fact, as do geologists. See here: https://www.encyclopedia.com/science/encyclopedias-almanacs-... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stratum You have to distinguish between the words palier and niveau! -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2 hrs (2021-03-18 16:42:23 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- so three strata with 37 levels and similar to "bands" that you initially considered. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2 hrs (2021-03-18 16:43:31 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- https://link.springer.com/referenceworkentry/10.1007/978-1-4... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 5 hrs (2021-03-18 20:31:09 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- "rock strata" might actually be better than "rocky" on 2nd thoughts |
