neutral  Nikki Scott-Despaigne: Strictly speaking, the "alternance" here is "alternance politique" and about alternating power. That is not quite the same thing as an "alternative". There may be many alternatives without "alternance". But "alternative" may be how the term is used here.

a credible transition of power

Explanation:
See:

https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternance_politique
L’alternance politique se produit lorsque des partis appartenant à des courants politiques différents se succèdent au pouvoir. En pratique, l'alternance consiste généralement en un renversement de la majorité politique lors d'élections présidentielles et/ou législatives.

English version of the same page:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peaceful_transition_of_power

A peaceful transition or transfer of power is a concept important to democratic governments in which the leadership of a government peacefully hands over control of government to a newly-elected leadership. This may be after elections or during the transition from a different kind of political regime, such as the postcommunist period after the fall of the Soviet Union,[2] or the elections in Libya following the fall of Muammar Gaddafi.[1]

Notes to answerer
Asker: Transition would doubtless be a good rendering. However, "alternance" goes beyond a mere transition of power, it implies iteration, alternation, succession: one power, then another, another and so on. Transition is a change of state; "alternance" entails changes that occur over and over again. The organization in question does not advocate solely a change to another government, but a return to the democratic succession, alternation of powers.

agree  Nikki Scott-Despaigne: "Alternance" is about alternating political power, the transition being an expression of democracy. If the term is being used correcty in the soruce document, this would be an accurate rendering. The source may mean "alternative" though. ;-)

disagree  Daryo: in this case it's about creating/finding WHO will be the other party/political force to alternate to. In a dictature, dictators do their best/worst to eliminate any "credible alternative", so no there's no one to alternate to at all, no "alternance".

a realistic changeover

Explanation:
If an organization struggles against a dictatorship and a totalitarian government which oppresses people, the organization of a changeover of authority, power and leadership is not easy to imagine. Ideally the oppressive government would peaceably handover its authority to a democratically elected new leadership.

'Political turnovers, changeovers or swings to or from a different political angle or system denote the regular passing over (succession) of power from parties pr coalitions, within the framework of the long-standing (existing) institutions. The changeover is enabled by the presence of bi-parties, which are political parties consisting of two groups, affecting or made of two groups or parties, bilateral. A bipartisan agreement or changeover of power consists of two political parties, or it's supported by two political parties, and the use of a majority vote system.'

FR: "L'alternance politique est la succession régulière du pouvoir de partis ou de coalitions de partis, dans le cadre des institutions existentes. (L'alternance est facilitée par l'existence du bipartidisme et l'emploi d'un mode de scrutin majoritaire."

Example sentence(s):
