French term

3 reprises de mots en milieu de rhèse

French to English Other Linguistics Speech
On note ///////3 reprises de mots en milieu de rhèses,/////// 2 erreurs sur les logatomes, 2 erreurs phonétiques et une omission de mot.

From a speech assessment report by a speech-therapist.

French definition:
Rhèse \féminin - from the ancient Greek: rhésis (meaning to speak)
(Linguistique) Groupe de mots d'une phrase qui porte un sens et cadence le discours.

I need the exact corresponding English word and not a replacement as this for a medical report and it needs to be precise and exact.

Thanks for your help.

Discussion

Charles Davis Dec 19, 2016:
@Drmanu That's pretty much what it means, I think. I think I would say "in mid-phrase", but there are probably several acceptable alternatives.
Drmanu49 Dec 19, 2016:
@Charles, my latest comment was "the production of a meaningful linguistic expression". And I am fairly confident about reprise (se reprendre) which is not répétition (se répéter).
Charles Davis Dec 19, 2016:
rhèse Definitely not rhesis in English, in this sense. Nor speech, nor even statement, which would mean utterance here: a different thing. A number of terms have been proposed and used for this in English linguistics, including tone group, intonation group, intonation phrase, intonation unit, rhythm unit and breath group. But we are dealing here with medicine, not linguistics, and I think "phrase" is the best word to use (FR "phrase" as used in the definition quoted means sentence, of course). A phrase is a minimum meaningful group of words, and although the definition of rhèse is phonological (cadence le discours) as well as semantic (porte un sens), I think it is what an English-speaking speech therapist would use here.

I am not sure about reprises, though. Dr Manu could be right about correction. It doesn't have to be repetition; in discourse analysis there can be reprise-répétition or reprise-altération.
Drmanu49 Dec 19, 2016:
It is not stutter, in my experience it is the correction of a word which seems inadequate (pronunciation or meaning) to the patient. So 3 corrections in meaningful speech (rhesis), 2 mistakes logatome = meaningless mono or poly syllables, and 1 word omission
philgoddard Dec 19, 2016:
It sounds like a definition of a clause - it's not rhesis, which is a speech in Greek drama. I assume reprise means repetition, so maybe this person has a stammer/stutter. What do other people think?
