neutral  Tony M: 'city' is too restricitve: what if they are a country pædiatrician?

agree  WS McCallum: It's easy to overthink "de ville". I would opt for "city" or "town"; if they were in the country, the French would just be "pédiatre rural" or "pédiatre en zone rurale" (plenty of Google hits for both).

pediatre de ville
Out-of-hospital pediatrician

Explanation:
This may refer to a pediatrician who administers primary or community healthcare services outside the hospital. Primary care being the advice and treatment you receive while community care is the health services you receive close to your home or in your home administered by the said pediatrician.

agree  Tony M: Exactly the right explanation, though not entirely happy about your suggested term; a little awkward making it an adjectival phrase, might be bette to say e.g. '...working in the community'

neutral  Timothy Rake: Agree with Tony; quite awkward. I’d rather use “in-office...”

neutral  WS McCallum: This translation assumes a duality between "pédiatre de ville" and "pédiatre hospitalier", which may apply in some instances, but not in others.

pediatre de ville
Local-practice pediatrician

Explanation:
As an alternative suggestion. While technically correct, “out-of-hospital” is descriptive, but IMO a bit clumsy and cumbersome

agree  Tony M: I think this is going in the right direction — though do note they might not necessarily be all that 'local', certainly not in the sense of 'neighbourhood': I consult with a number of independent specialists, in the nearest large town.

agree  Cyril Tollari: private practice pediatrician?

disagree  WS McCallum: I think this is getting away from the French meaning; usually it's just some sort of downtown practitioner.

disagree  WS McCallum: The problem with this translation is that "pédiatre communautaire" is also used in French (France and Canada), so although synonymous, it's not quite the same thing.
