Explanation:
I'll venture this term since commodity trading is the topic.

For internal company purposes, however, a common 'ledger' may be more appropriate.

Assay book also came to mind, but I couldn't justify it in the end....
Best of luck!

In fact, assay book seems more about prospecting than trading...

So far, I'm preferring your idea or order/ledger no.....

Asker: Thanks. I was tempted to simplify it to Order Number, but Order/Ledger Number looks good. I'm sure the client is hoping to see a couplet here.

Massbuch; Massenbuch
weights & measures ledger; (probate/insolvency) estate account book

Explanation:
Notes:

1. the term could have contracted from Masse(n)buch where, in other German-speaking countries, and to distinguish it from a list of insolvent assets and liabilities (Insolvenzmassebuch I have anote of in my own glossaries).

2. In a tax (and notarial) context, it might not be possible to list all items individually, but by weight and measurement. For instance, a Notary handed an envelope and told not to open it unless and until a certain event happens might be suspicious but record the envelope or box by size and weight.

3. Puzzle: the Daily Mail reported last week that the male inhabitants of Hull, as in (y)our ex-Uni. Andrew, have larger feet than those in Oxford. I have a Viking vs. Roman-invasionary idea why that it is, but a Maßbuch might be needed to record the results.

Never mind, Andrew. I won't now be inviting you to our half-century (1969 start) linguists' graduation reunion at a pub in London at the end of November, ha, ha!

Example sentence(s):
  • unter I 1 der Bestand der am Jahresschluss venıvahrten Geldbeträge, soweit die Notaranderkonten elektronisch geführt werden ausweislich der letzten Eintragungen im *Verwahrungs- und Massenbuch.*

Notes to answerer
Asker: Dear Adrian. I agree that ledger is the way to go here, as I mentioned in my comment to CP some hours earler. I don't think there is any weighing or measuring being done at the warehouse, but I may be wrong. Thanks for your input. AJS

agree  Gordon Matthews: "(weights & measures) ledger" clearly seems to be the right answer in this context, so "Bestellung/Massbuch (Nr.)" would simply be "Order/ledger (no.)", i.e. order or ledger number.

-> Thanks and danke! City of London Notaries note the dimensions in a single 'Protocol' (Record) and not in a sepearte ledger or register.

agree  thefastshow: With Gordon: ledger sounds convincing in this context

Note to reference poster
Asker: Thanks, Kim. That confirms my suspicion that they have taken the Swiss spelling for this one term. Otherwise, standard German throughout.
