fasce perimetrali di ritensionamento

Italian to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting a condition report for a painting by a known Italian artist of the 20th century
An art conservator has prepared a condition report for a painting produced in the late 1920's. At some point, the canvas had to be restretched or 'retensioned' and fasce perimetrali di ritensionamento is what was used to do this. I've looked through several glossaries in both languages (see 2 of them below). Somehow 'band' doesn't seem like the right word

Here is the full sentence: Sono presenti fasce perimetrali di ritensionamento applicate alla tela originale.

It is indeed strips of canvas applied with a bonding agent (glue) to extend the edges of a degraded canvas so that the new strip can be tacked to the stretcher frame.

I don't think it's canvas, it's something applied to it.

The source text does not say what material, but I think it is linen canvas.

I think it's either glue or tape Per l’applicazione delle **fasce perimetrali** si è utilizzato il Beva 371...Si tratta di un prodotto a base di etilenvinilacetato, paraffina, resina chetonica, al 40% di contenuto solido in solventi alifatici e aromatici. Utilizzato con l’apposito DILUENTE 372 forma un adesivo reversibile e con buona elasticità e stabilità chimica.

So it's reversible in case better techniques are developed in future. It's available as a brush-on glue or strips of film, so martini's answer may or may not be right.

Retensioning the canvas

Canvasses lose tension over time, and retensioning returns the canvas to its original tension. If necessary, the canvas is removed from the stretcher and fully remounted.

Edge backing

Edge backing is applied if the edges of the canvas that are attached to the frame are no longer strong enough to maintain proper tension. In these cases, the four edges of the fabric are strengthened by attaching strips of supporting fabric, after which they are nailed to the frame.
