Italian to English translations [Non-PRO] Linguistics / BACK TRANSLATION
Italian term or phrase:Lei vada
Avrei bisogno di usare la back translation per la politeness form Lei, in quanto ho bisogno di evidenziare proprio il concetto di politeness form/ terzo pronome singolare. Voi come lo mettereste? Mi servirebbe comunque che sia conciso in quanto dovrei metterlo in una tabella…. Grazie mille
that was used for the translation into Italian but of course she has the full Italian text that now has to be back-translated (and not re-translated) into English. Excel is often used for these jobs. Maybe that's the 'table'.
Actually, the OP also wrote that the translation would have to be short in order to "fit in a table", so, I may very well be mistaken, but I was under the impression that's all the context there is to that expression...
Also, if she was asked to do a back-translation of the Italian target, then she probably doesn't have the source text.
... if this really is a back translation then it is quite possible that the original contained no particular emphasis on politeness. The translator probably just used "lei" on the basis of the relationship e.g. two strangers.
Agree completely. Common sense really. Context is need to see what the actual problem is. I repeat however, this is a back-translation so it's not a good sign that this presents a problem.
sorry, pehaps I did not make myself understood, I only wanted to point out that without context it's very difficult to give an answer and also that I don't recall an English expression different from YOU, be it politeness form or not, there's nothing else to use, as far as I know. So Sabrina may certainly be right, but without context who knows what the asker really wanted? :)
I have just proposed what I would write as a translation for this "Lei vada", just as it is without any context, but here it is really important to have more context as Giuseppe has rightly pointed out...
As I said, I do think it's rather a matter of context, me too, and without knowing it nobody will ever find the correct suggestion, not even a mother tongue linguist, a complete sentence is more than necessary, it's vital, IMHO. :), but perhap I misunderstood something. Sorry in that case.
you should provide the entire sentence. I have now removed my agree to an answer as I have NO idea if it's correct because there is no context at all. A back-translation is used to see if the translation into the target language is correct and if it's wrong, then the back-translation must also reflect the error. The fact you have to ask how to 'translate' this is a sign it won't be a back-translation at all.
di usare YOUR Majesty... per la Regina !!! non saprei cosa altro usare per il nostro Lei, non esiste forma in inglese che io abbia mai sentito per la forma di cortesia uguale alla nostra italiana. C'è YOU e basta, ma non è chiara la differenza tra tu, Lei, Voi, voi, ovviamente. :)
Io tenderei a concordare con Sabrina. Inoltre "Lei vada" nel tuo caso non è la forma di cortesia dell'imperativo "vai"? In tal caso mi sembra che "you may go" sottolinei già la differenza rispetto a "go" (se non mi sfugge qualcosa).
di contesto in più, una bella frase intera, altrimenti le possibilità sono diverse e magari non consone a quanto vuoi tu. Lei vada ad aprire, Lei si tolga dai piedi, Lei vada a quel paese, Lei vada pure, Lei vada, tanto rimango io.

Notes to answerer
Asker: So che questa è la traduzione ufficiale ma a me nella back translation servirebbe evidenziare il fatto che venga usato Lei invece del tu, non solo in questo caso ma in molti altri esempi. Non c'è un modo ufficiale per la back translation della forma Lei?
