Norwegian term or phrase: Stortinget vedtar lover som presser mer nynorsk inn i samfunnet enn det folket..
...vil ha

'Stortinget vedtar lover som presser mer nynorsk inn i samfunnet enn det folket vil ha'

2 QUESTIONS!

1. Stylistically, saying 'det folket', why does the definite article appear twice, and does it alter the meaning at all?

2. 'vil ha' - I often find when translating from Norwegian into English, that a higher register or more sophisticated solution has to be given in the target text, and saying 'wants/wants to have' just won't cut it, so.....

'Parliamentary Acts are being implemented, feeding Norway with more Nynorsk than is wanted'

- i thought I would go with 'feed', earlier in the text 'tvangsforet med nynorsk' is mentioned, so I thought I would stick to the feeding metaphor

Your input and suggestions are as always welcomed and appreciated...

agree  Hanne Dale: 'enn (det) folket vil ha' --> '...than (what the) people desire' - this is how I understand 'det folket', at least, and not as a double definite article. 'Det' could easily be cut without altering the meaning significantly.

agree  Michele Fauble: 'enn det folket vil ha' = (literally) 'than that (which) the people want'

agree  lingo_montreal: ... or informally/simply "more Nynorsk than people want"

agree  Per Bergvall: The moderator must be asleep. At 15 words, this is way over the limit for Kudoz terminology issues. But hey - it's out there. "'det folket' should have been 'hva folket', and so the bits fall into place. Then Google translate could have done this.
