Polish to English translations [PRO] Art/Literary - Medical: Health Care / Choice of correct word
Polish term or phrase:Please help
Dear professional translators, My agency is translating a file for the general public (adult people/seniors) about use of cannabis in Canada. A polish translator translated the word "cannabis" as "marijuana". My client asks to subsitute the word "marijuana" with the word "cannabis". The reasoning behind that is that the scientific group that developed the booklet insists on using the word "cannabis" rather than "marijuana" since marijuana is more a slang than a medical term and is not intended to be used in the translation since the booklet is about usage of cannabis for medical/health care and recreational purposes. The translator refuses to make changes explaining that word cannabis does not exist and understood in the Polish language. Please share your expertise and advice. Thank you!
sam też mam mieszany pogląd na temat „produktów konopnychnych”, jednak ja ich nie wymyśliłem .....

Perfectly well done! Both sides of the Wielka Woda! :)) Well, I suggested to change a bit -- "z konopi" instead of "konopne". A "produkty konopne" googles somehow, and maybe a "produkty wytwarzane z konopii" would replace "produkty konopne". To be frank, I got lost so tell me, you would like to name a cannabis" - marihuana everywhere in the translated booklet. Anyway, it's at a glance visible that the answerer choosed rather scant confidence, thus he doesn't deserve the 11 disagree in your life.
I hope you know me well enough from this forum to realize that I do not give "disagrees" lightly - maybe 10 in 22 years here. But I send "produkty konopne" to 10 of my friends, on both sides of the ocean, asking what they have in mind then they hear "produkty konopne" - 10 responded "a piece of rope," 3 added cosmetics made of hemp oil, and 1 added CBD. So clearly, the answer is useless for all practical purposes

I'm giving up, then. Though, people using cannabis PRODUCTS like oil, eatable and inhaling products, take, as I said twice already ;), advantage of konopie /cannabis in Canada, but are being treated by "marihuana lecznicza/medyczna" in Poland ;). So ... have a very good time in times :) to come, greetings, dear ALL!
Guys, Being that stubborn translator in question, I have a few things to say. It is not true that 99% of the booklet is about plant - it is about advantages and potential risks of using cannabis PRODUCT - also to get high, which is perfectly legal in Canada. I don't know anyone getting high on "produkty konopne" - but hey, the client is always right! Right? Right! Also, it's marihuana, not marijuana. Is marihuana slang in Polish by ay stretch of imagination?

Now, on I familiarised myself with your examples and also the text I found on the Internet (Canadian traces :), I admit that I was wrong a bit in forcing the word marihuana in the entire/the booklet context. I am certain that proposal by @geopiet here is perfectly placed as equivalent, accordingly. I am going to support this his answer. Cheers!
Thank you, Jacek. Here is an example from the booklet: Older Canadians and cannabis use Cannabis use by older adults is increasing. Some want to see if it helps with the effects of aging and chronic disease. Others just enjoy using it

Could you please provide us with at least 2 or 3 sentences representing the context of the "plant" and the context of the "product"?

right word in Polish for cannabis in your context

Sorry, now I've noticed that you wrote in the discussion -- 99% of the content has the word cannabis referring to the plant - what differs from the context of your original question. Again, if anything in your English text refers to plant, the proper translation is -- konopie (plural). Marihuana, oils you've mentioned, etc. products are made from konopie, thus are - produkty konopne - including marihuana.
Dear Translators, thank you for the feedback. The translation is from English to Polish. In the English version 99% of the content has the word cannabis referring to the plant from which they produce oil, eatable products, inhaling products mainly for theraputical purpose and recreation as well. What would be the right word in Polish for cannabis in this context?

First of all, looks like you are seeking for translation from English into Polish within the Polish-English pair. I do agree with our colleauge Frank here, except - Polish spelling is marihuana, not marijuana. Cannabis is not a proper word in Polish, in your context to name the good/product actually, since cannabis is a plant (in Polish reality :). So, "general public (adult people/seniors)" in Canada are compelled to take advantage of "marihuana" in Polish language, not "cannabis" :). A Polish translator did thus well, I strongly believe.
Marijuana is the term used most often in Polish to denote cannabis. A common term for describing cannabis is konopie, konopie indyjskie: Indyjska odmiana konopi, tak zwana cannabis indica w przeciwieństwie do cannabis sativa była w znacznie mniejszym stopniu przydatna do produkcji ubrań ze względu na krótsze i gorszej jakości włókna https://repozytorium.uwb.edu.pl/jspui/bitstream/11320/2597/1... This is the only federally funded site where it is legal to cultivate cannabis for scientific research in the United States. To jest jedyne utrzymywane przez rząd miejsce legalnej uprawy konopi indyjskich do badań naukowych w całych USA. https://en.bab.la/dictionary/english-polish/cultivate
