Russian term

Шухер, мусора!

Russian to English Other Linguistics
Здравствуйте. Как бы вы перевели такое выражение? Можно ли тут использовать термин five-o, или какой-то другой?

Discussion

eduard_ Mar 10, 2015:
Five-o isn't conveying the derogatory nature of мусор. Maybe something like pigs would be more appropriate.
Mark Berelekhis Mar 10, 2015:
Jiggers For what it's worth, I've never in my life heard that word actually used by anyone, whether in life, film, books or otherwise.
Maxim Olshin Mar 10, 2015:
Jiggers! Как предлагает мультитран, но Partridge указывает первое употребление в 1911 году, и, почему-то только как предупреждение о приближающемся prison guard.

Five-o!

I'd omit 'Шухер' altogether, as there's no natural way of rendering it. Simply 'five-o!' conveys everything necessary. It's also what the lookouts in The Wire (greatest show ever) shouted whenever the cops showed up.

Thank you.
agree Angela Greenfield : Wow, Mister Wire, wow. Respect. Also, by the way, they use "Po-po" on the show. But it's very regional and mostly used on the East Coast. May not be a universal term.

That's true! "po-po" was even more prevalent. I am humbled! I would only add that "po-po" might pertain more to the black American communities.

Или просто "Jiggers, the cops!"

Спасибо!
neutral Maxim Olshin : Does anyone really use that word? It seems dated.

neutral Susan Welsh : Maybe it's just me, but I never heard of "jiggers" in American English. "Look out!" would be usual.

Here's an example from an American movie (although, I admit, it's an old movie): http://monstermoviemusic.blogspot.com/2008/08/scared-stiff-d...

Raid, cops are coming, or cops, we've been surrounded, cops.

The Bill!

Just a UK variant, as the other options are more American. 'The Bill' was also the name of a long-running TV series about the police.
