English translation:(phone) number of group's parent company
Explanation:
I assume number here refers to telephone number. If it meant tax ID I imagine it would say RFC.
Matriz is a little tricker. Informally it can often mean headquarters or main office, but formally it usually refers to the parent company, and as this mentions group also, I'd say that parent company is most likely.

Yes Neil, that's my take because I just can't think of any other significant number that would apply here. The RFC isn't actually a number, it's an alphanumeric code. The first four characters are letters, followed by six digits and then the "homoclave", consisting of three numbers and/or letters. As you say, it's probably best to just leave it as "number" in any case.

There is actually a slight difference between holding company and parent company too, in that a holding company is a type of parent company.

Parent companies can either be conglomerates or holding companies. A conglomerate, such as General Electric, is a huge company with its own business venture that also owns other companies with their own business ventures. A holding company, on the other hand, is put in place specifically to own a group of subsidiaries and does not conduct its own business operations. Holding companies normally form to realize tax advantages among a connected group of smaller companies.

So a "sociedad controladora" can be a parent company, whereas a "matriz" can be, but is not always, a holding company.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Phone number? That never occurred to me. I assumed it meant some sort of reference or registration number, like the RFC, as Kim suggests. So far I'm calling it "Group holding company number" (or similar, am doing something else right now)...

Asker: PS: I just told the client some of the terms may vary, to cover my a.... back :)
