Carajo es voz afín en todas las lenguas románicas hispánicas, por lo que el filólogo y romanista Joan Coromines le supone un origen prerromano, proponiendo en el Diccionario crítico etimológico castellano e hispánico (Coromines y Pascual, 1983) la raíz celta cario para el término.
If voz afín means something like ‘cognate word’, why not “Carajo tiene voz afín…” rather than “Carajo es voz afín…”?
Best Wishes,
Simon

a cognate
if you look on linguee, afín is one of the suggestions for 'cognate'. As a languages teacher in the UK, we teach students about cognates a lot, so the word is known.

: While you might use 'cognate' in teaching translation, this is a discussion of etymology. Just sayin': I studied etymology as part of my graduate work in linguistics.

Yes and cognates are used when referring to the derivation of words: 1. LINGUISTICS (of a word) having the same linguistic derivation as another (e.g. English father, German Vater, Latin pater ).
