dejar un lastre

Buenas

possible phrases Eating at the same table can lead to lifelong friendships, especially after long, drawn-out after-dinner conversations filled with the drowsiness that leaves the meal feeling like ballast.
Eating at the same table can lead to lifelong friendships, especially after long, drawn-out after-dinner conversations (exchanges) filled with the lethargy (drowsiness) that makes the food feel like a heavy weight. (in the stomach)

leave you feeling sated

I agree with Barbara's explanation, but "with a pleasant feeling of fullness" can expressed in a single word. I would ignore the mention of food, and translate "que deja como un lastre la comida" as "leaves you feeling sated".

leave a ballast

disagree philgoddard : Sorry, but this is not good English. It sounds unpleasant, which is not the idea at all.

I know it sounds weird, but I still believe it is a better representation of what the author tried to say.

which leaves one with a pleasant feeling of fullness

The appetite is completely satiated, so that one feels a sense of comfort, like in the case when one eats what is called "comfort food".
