Spanish term or phrase: lance (as used here)
In a text about hunting for ibex and deer, I have the Castilian word "lance" to put into British English. I found what it means in Spanish, but I do not know, and can't seem to find, the word for it in English. I hope there is a hunter out there!!

Here is the definition:

Examples of phrases:

Could it just mean "attack" or "attempt to kill"? Please help!

Footage has emerged on social media of the moment twelve dogs and a deer plunge off the side of a cliff during a hunt in the village of Herreruela, Spain. The identified hunter had sent his dogs to catch the wild animal on Sunday when the dogs began to lose their footing and slip. During the footage an onlooker can be overheard yelling to the hunter: 'Run, the dogs are falling' as the first three go over the edge.

Dogs participating in the hunt must possess a number of qualities. They must be fearless, ferocious to game, obey implicitly to their owner, be vigilant, have a sharp nose, sensitive ears and have good eyesight. Sometimes these dogs require a large size and strength - it all depends on the type of hunting.

Sighthounds work independently and chase their prey to kill for themselves. They usually target animals that are smaller than themselves, whereas scent hound are not afraid of larger prey since they are in a pack. Some sight hounds, such as the Irish wolfhound, are bred to hunt and chase larger animals like wolves.
