Source text - Italian The SIArch-Univaq, an Architectural Information System for Cultural Heritage Romolo Continenza, Ilaria Trizio* DICEAA, University of L’Aquila, Italy; ITC-CNR, Construction Technologies Institute, Italian National Research Council, Italy ABSTRACT Il SIArch-Univaq è uno strumento di conoscenza e catalogazione del patrimonio architettonico storico, studiato per fornire un potente strumento conoscitivo a tutti gli operatori interessati allo studio ed alla conservazione. Caratteristica principale di questo Sistema Informativo per l’architettura è il suo notevole livello di approfondimento, spinto sino alla individuazione di tutti i componenti costruttivi e la semplicità di consultazione, attivata attraverso l’interrogazione di uno, o più, modelli tridimensionali appositamente realizzati. Nato all’interno dell’Università degli Studi dell’Aquila (Italia), è stato realizzato nell’ambito di una ricerca finanziata con i fondi che il Ministero dell’Università e della Ricerca scientifica mette a disposizione per i progetti di rilevante interesse nazionale (PRIN). In questo articolo ne sono descritte la struttura, le caratteristiche e le funzionalità. IL GIS PER L’ARCHITETTURA L’idea di strutturare un sistema informativo su e per l’architettura è nata dalla constatazione del fatto che attualmente, per compiere gli interventi sui beni culturali ed in tutte le fasi di intervento, si produce una mole consistente di elaborazioni in formato digitale. Al termine dei lavori, di queste elaborazioni resta in archivio soltanto una traccia cartacea; quella in formato digitale, affidata prevalentemente ad una copia su disco, e quindi consultabile con qualche difficoltà, resta inutilizzata sino al termine di vita del supporto cui è affidata. Queste informazioni, invece, se conservate nel loro formato digitale sorgente e rese disponibili, potrebbero tornare ad essere di notevole utilità per una infinità di utilizzazioni, non ultime la programmazione e la realizzazione di interventi successivi. L’impiego del mezzo digitale apre poi le porte alla fantasia del ricercatore; infatti, se si integra la semplice archiviazione dei dati con una loro indicizzazione si può trarre vantaggio dalle ampie potenzialità messe a disposizione da questo mezzo. Oltre alla mera ricerca seriale diviene allora possibile una ampia serie di ricerche tematiche sulla base dati, si possono effettuare molte interrogazioni trasversali, vale a dire tutte le associazioni possibili fra i criteri di indicizzazione prescelti. Se a ciò si aggiunge che le più recenti tecnologie digitali consentono l’archiviazione dei dati non soltanto nel convenzionale formato tabulare ma in tutti i possibili formati, si comprende quanto ampie possano divenire le possibilità operative di una tale forma di archiviazione. L’impiego di un software GIS, infine, oltre a fornire tutte le potenzialità descritte consente anche di disporre della referenziazione dei dati e la loro associazione ad un modello digitale, sia esso del terreno (georeferenziazione) che di un altro qualsiasi oggetto (ad es. un manufatto architettonico). LE SCELTE ALLA BASE DEL PROGETTO Definizione del quadro dei requisiti L’idea di produrre un DB per l’architettura, molto interessante sotto il profilo scientifico, ha dato spazio alla nostra fantasia di ricercatori , ma ha anche posto un’ampia serie di problemi. Primo fra tutti la definizione della quantità di materiale da archiviare e della sua qualità. In sostanza occorreva preliminarmente definire con precisione il profilo dei futuri utilizzatori ed il quadro delle loro esigenze. Da questa scelta dipende direttamente la scelta dei criteri di indicizzazione del materiale archiviato, la scala cui spingere l’approfondimento delle informazioni ed, in ultima analisi, la dimensione della base di dati. La volontà di costruire uno strumento di conoscenza per l’architettura non poteva prescindere dalla definizione del profilo dei suoi futuri previsti utilizzatori, ad essi avrebbe dovuto, nella fase di applicazione, essere affidata la compilazione, la gestione, la conservazione e la eventuale integrazione, ove necessario, delle sue funzionalità. In sintesi: chi era il nostro “cliente”? A chi pensavamo potesse interessare questo nuovo strumento? Chi avrebbe avuto interesse a sostenere l’onere (e la spesa) della sua compilazione e manutenzione? Invertendo la prospettiva: quale interesse avrebbero potuto destare le sue funzionalità? Sarebbe stata opportuna la scelta di consentirne l’integrazione con le altre procedure allo studio, o già attuate, nel nostro Paese? La scelta operata è stata quella di definire un prodotto che avrebbe potuto adattarsi ad un quadro esigenziale molto vasto, esteso dal semplice curioso, interessato prevalentemente alla acquisizione delle informazioni di base, sino al progettista, interessato al massimo livello di dettaglio delle informazioni ottenibile. Una così grande mole di informazioni e di interrogazioni attese avrebbero potuto meglio essere organizzate secondo un sistema di moduli, organizzati secondo differenti dimensioni scalari, che fossero disponibili ai possibili utilizzatori singolarmente o integralmente, a seconda delle esigenze. Al di là delle barriere che vengono artificialmente introdotte per motivi commerciali, come ricercatori siamo portati a pensare al mondo del sapere come ad un sistema ideale, completamente interconnesso, all’interno del quale sia possibile disporre liberamente delle informazioni, ma non abbiamo comunque trascurato di pensare che al gestore di questa procedura fosse riservata la possibilità di gestire l’accesso alle informazioni in maniera selettiva, assegnando differenti credenziali d’accesso alle diverse tipologie di utenti. In quest’ottica possiamo sommariamente definire le principali utilità ottenibili ed i possibili utilizzatori secondo tre diversi livelli scalari. Alla scala delle informazioni generali le informazioni ottenibili sono quelle di base relative alla: georeferenziazione, catalogazione del bene, storia, caratteri peculiari. Tra i potenziali gestori troviamo il MIBACT (Ministero dei Beni e delle Attività Culturali e del turismo) e le Soprintendenze, per i quali queste informazioni potrebbero andare a sostituire, o meglio ad integrare, le convenzionali schedature attualmente in uso nelle Soprintendenze. Altri potenziali gestori delle informazioni, potrebbero essere gli enti locali, in particolare le regioni, che già in alcuni casi gestiscono dei database territoriali sui beni architettonici per renderli disponibili, su base web, ad un’utenza molto vasta che spazia dalla semplice promozione dell’offerta turistica sino agli studiosi ed ai ricercatori. In quest’ultimo caso l’accesso all’intera base dati potrebbe rivelarsi di grande utilità ai fini della ricerca. La base dati può infatti essere interrogata secondo opportuni criteri e fornire nuovi spunti alla ricerca scientifica premessa importante per il raggiungimento di sintesi inattese. Alla scala delle informazioni di primo dettaglio sul bene, i dati desumibili sono quelli riferiti al suo stato di conservazione ed alle operazioni di restauro e/o manutenzione subite nel tempo. Si tratta di informazioni che potrebbero andare ad integrare la “Carta del Rischio del patrimonio Architettonico” di cui si è già detto, utile supporto alla programmazione degli interventi ed alla definizione di oculate strategie per l’allocazione delle risorse. Anche in questo caso i potenziali utilizzatori sono le Soprintendenze, ma anche gli Enti locali a qualsiasi titolo interessati. Alla scala del maggior dettaglio ottenibile sul singolo bene architettonico si avrà la disponibilità dell’intero corpus delle informazioni relative al dettaglio degli interventi compiuti sul bene, ad iniziare dal rilievo, compiuto in tutti i suoi aspetti (geometrico, architettonico, del degrado etc.), proseguendo poi con il progetto e le indagini che ne hanno motivato le scelte (geologiche, strutturali, chimiche etc.). A valle delle informazioni progettuali viene poi la documentazione dettagliata delle lavorazioni eseguite, complete della loro ubicazione e quantità, accompagnate da una accurata documentazione fotografica. Si tratta di informazioni che si rivelano di grande utilità per gli operatori. La costruzione della storia restaurativa e manutentiva del bene è, infatti, indispensabile alla programmazione ma anche alla progettazione di futuri interventi. Al panorama dei potenziali utenti che abbiamo imparato ad individuare, Soprintendenze ed enti locali, vengono ad aggiungersi, così, anche i progettisti e gli esecutori, i quali trovano nella conoscenza approfondita del bene e degli interventi di cui è stato oggetto, le premesse indispensabili per nuovi interventi pertinenti e consapevoli. Il software operativo L’iter che ha condotto alla selezione della piattaforma GIS da adottare per la formazione del database, per l’importazione dei modelli da indicizzare per l’interrogazione e per la consultazione ha risentito fortemente della evoluzione nel tempo delle piattaforme GIS disponibili. La formulazione, la messa a punto ed il collaudo di questo Sistema Informativo ha avuto inizio nel 2006, mentre le operazioni di collaudo sono attualmente in fase di conclusione. Un Sistema Informativo per l’Architettura, nella mente di quanti erano coinvolti nel progetto sin dalle sue prime fasi di elaborazione, doveva consentire il contatto e l’approccio all’oggetto architettonico attraverso la sua specifica consistenza tridimensionale. L’idea era quella di rendere direttamente interrogabili uno o più modelli tridimensionali degli oggetti architettonici allo studio e di realizzare, grazie a questi, un’interfaccia semplice ed adeguata all’immissione ed all’interrogazione della base-dati. In realtà, al tempo dell’avvio del progetto, nel 2006, nessuna piattaforma, fra quelle disponibili, era in grado di operare realmente in un ambiente tridimensionale. Pur essendo, al tempo, già disponibili diverse piattaforme GIS open source, quali ad esempio Grass e Quantum GIS, entrambe operative in ambiente bidimensionale, dovendo scegliere una piattaforma sulla quale operare, dopo lunghe riflessioni, si decise di puntare l’attenzione su quella commercializzata dalla società californiana ESRI con il nome di ArcView. Essa godeva di un’ampia diffusione nelle pubbliche amministrazioni per la gestione di dati territoriali, era quindi ben collaudata, aveva già elaborato delle applicazioni per l’impiego sul web, e sembrava garantire rapide e continue possibilità di sviluppo ed adeguamento dei software alle nuove necessità del mercato, e quindi anche l’auspicio di poter giungere un giorno ad operare direttamente su modelli tridimensionali. Nelle prime fasi di progettazione del sistema, non potendo, con la release 8.2 della piattaforma ESRI, operare su modelli tridimensionali si è dovuto ricorrere alla elaborazione di una complessa struttura di rimandi fra le rappresentazioni in pianta ed una serie di sezioni significative disposte in maniera opportuna in modo da indagare tutti gli elementi componenti il volume architettonico. Soltanto con la release 9.3, rilasciata nel 2008, la piattaforma è stata implementata in ambiente 3D. Da quel momento, l’adozione di una interfaccia tridimensionale interrogabile, elemento centrale del progetto, è divenuto un obiettivo realmente perseguibile. LA STRUTTURA DEL SIARCH-UNIVAQ La scelta di articolare la documentazione del bene architettonico secondo i tre diversi livelli di scala: da quello relativo all’assetto generale, da quello di ogni singolo componente il bene a quello di ogni singolo elemento costitutivo, ha comportato una analoga tripartizione della struttura della base dati. Per consentire l’integrazione della base dati rilevata con quella del MIBACT conosciuta come “Carta del rischio del patrimonio culturale”; per l’acquisizione dei dati è stato impiegato, mediante opportuni adattamenti, il modello schedografico impiegato in quell’occasione dall’ISCR (Istituto Superiore Centrale per il Restauro). In particolare, per unificare i criteri di rilevamento e semplificare l’attività dello schedatore, sono stati conservati: la struttura gerarchica, il lessico ed i vocabolari, sperimentati ampiamente nel lungo periodo della sua compilazione. Sono stati anche mantenuti gli standard catalografici dell’ICCD (Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo e la Documentazione), impiegati nella parte anagrafico-identificativa dei beni, nonché la struttura complessiva della scheda, che consiste in una prima parte dedicata alla identificazione ed alla descrizione del bene ed in una seconda, volta alla descrizione del suo stato di conservazione. La prima fase di schedatura (Scheda 01_SIArch – Unità Complesso Architettonico) riguarda l’acquisizione delle informazioni generali relative al bene culturale cosiddetto complesso, vale a dire composto di più elementi architettonici “componenti” fra loro ben distinguibili (ad esempio chiesa e canonica, villa rustica e sue dependances, convento con chiesa ed annessi, etc.). In questa scheda, oltre alla individuazione univoca dei diversi elementi componenti in cui si ritiene debba essere scomposto il complesso architettonico, in vista delle successive fasi di acquisizione di dati, vengono rilevate tutte le informazioni relative al complesso: individuazione (codici ICR, ICCD, etc.), ubicazione (regione, provincia comune, codice ISTAT, riferimenti geografici, riferimenti IGM e catastali, indirizzo etc.), descrizione (riferimenti al contesto, dimensioni e forma generale dell’impianto, numero dei piani, etc.), informazioni storiche (come desumibili dalla scheda MIBAC “A”), documentazione d’archivio (completa di riferimenti alle fonti e di copia di queste, ove possibile), assetto della proprietà, condizione giuridica, documentazione fotografica, dati dimensionali, numero ed individuazione degli elementi di pregio, accessibilità, stato generale di conservazione rilevabile ad una osservazione sommaria, funzionalità degli impianti (idrico, elettrico, riscaldamento, smaltimento acque piovane, ove presenti). Al fine della successiva importazione nella base dati, tutta la documentazione reperita viene digitalizzata ed associata alla scheda per la successiva inclusione nella base dati. Sulla base della scomposizione del complesso architettonico in singoli elementi “componenti”, è possibile procedere al secondo livello di schedatura (Scheda 02_SIArch – Unità Bene Componente), articolato in un numero di schede di rilevamento pari ad ogni singolo elemento “componente” individuato. Di questo vengono rilevati, con un dettaglio maggiore rispetto al caso precedente, i dati relativi: alla ubicazione del componente rispetto al complesso nei suoi aspetti tipologici ed alla sua configurazione planimetrica ed altimetrica, descritta in termini grafici e dimensionali. Il link alle schede successive è costituito dalla individuazione univoca delle singole unità vano individuate all’interno del cd. “bene componente”. Completano la scheda una serie di tabelle relative alle singole componenti edilizie: fondazioni, strutture in elevazione, orizzontamenti, collegamenti verticali, finiture, infissi, impianti, coperture. Di ogni componente sono rilevate tutte le informazioni utili alla sua esauriente descrizione: tipologia, materiali, dimensioni, epoca di realizzazione, stato di conservazione, descrizione qualitativa e quantitativa dell’eventuale danno rilevato. In una sezione specifica sono raccolte le informazioni relative agli eventuali interventi di manutenzione o restauro effettuati, al completo della relativa documentazione, ove disponibile. Completa il tutto la schedatura della documentazione fotografica. Il terzo livello di schedatura (Scheda 03_SIArch – Unità Spaziale Vano) è quello relativo all’ultimo livello di scomposizione operato, l’unità spaziale vano. Al suo interno, dopo le necessarie informazioni relative alla sua univoca individuazione, ne viene richiesta una puntuale descrizione storica, morfologica, grafica, dimensionale, dei materiali di finitura e degli apparati decorativi presenti. Ogni singolo elemento di definizione del vano (strutture in elevazione, orizzontamenti, infissi ed impianti) è poi descritto in dettaglio. Vengono rilevati: materiali, dimensioni, stato di conservazione e, ove presente, la descrizione qualitativa e quantitativa del danno. Anche in questo caso una specifica sezione è riferita agli interventi di manutenzione o restauro condotti ed alla loro puntuale descrizione, al completo della relativa documentazione, progettuale, contabile, grafica e fotografica, per quanto disponibile. RACCOLTA DELLE INFORMAZIONI E COMPILAZIONE DELLA BASE DI DATI La fase di raccolta dei dati è stata in un primo tempo pensata in forma cartacea per il compimento delle operazioni in loco, prevedendo una successiva fase di trascrizione delle informazioni raccolte all’interno del sistema. Successivamente, anche a seguito dell’evoluzione della strumentazione digitale, si è pensato di semplificare il lavoro rendendo possibile la compilazione delle schede di acquisizione dati direttamente in loco, facendo uso, ad esempio, di un tablet o di un notebook. Una volta identificato l’operatore e la squadra dei rilevatori, l’ente di appartenenza, la data ed il luogo della compilazione, la procedura consente l’introduzione delle informazioni, secondo l’articolazione programmata, sino alla chiusura della fase della compilazione. Analogamente vengono gestite tutte le successive operazioni di aggiornamento ed integrazione che dovessero rendersi necessarie. Seppur possibili, al momento non sono state previste modalità di immissione diretta dei dati via web. Una volta completate le operazioni di compilazione delle differenti schede di rilevamento, all’operatore, previa autenticazione, è richiesto il riversamento dei dati acquisiti all’interno del database generale. IL SUPPORTO INTERROGABILE DELLA BASE DI DATI Delle problematiche connesse alla costruzione ed all’importazione nel Sistema Informativo dei supporti interrogabili della base dati si tratta diffusamente in un paragrafo successivo; in questa sede si accennerà ad essi soltanto per dar conto del loro ruolo nella articolazione del sistema informativo e per dar conto delle coerenze esistenti fra strutturazione dei dati e scala e consistenza del modello. I modelli destinati a fungere da supporto interrogabile della base dati rilevata seguono, infatti, la tripartizione delle informazioni provenienti dalla schedatura. Il primo livello interrogabile è costituito dalla cartografia di base e dal modello orientato del terreno di sedime, cui sono riferite le informazioni relative alla scheda SIArch_01 di cui si è detto. Le principali informazioni contenute sono la georeferenziazione del bene complesso, il suo rapporto con il contesto ove è ubicato, la sua descrizione ed, infine, la sua scomposizione in un numero finito di elementi componenti il bene complesso. Il modello interrogabile riferito alla schedatura di secondo livello (Scheda 02_SIArch – Unità bene componente) consiste nel modello tridimensionale del bene componente, correttamente georeferenziato e collocato sul modello del terreno di cui al punto precedente. La sua articolazione nel numero delle parti rilevate nella scheda 02 ne consente l’indicizzazione ai contenuti della scheda e l’inderogabilità che ne consegue. Il modello riferito alla scomposizione di maggior dettaglio (Scheda 03_SIArch – Unità spaziale vano) consiste nella rappresentazione digitale tridimensionale dell’unità spaziale interessata, articolata anch’essa nel numero di elementi costitutivi rilevati nella scheda di competenza, l’indicizzazione di ogni elemento ne consente, anche in questo caso, l’inderogabilità. COSTRUZIONE ED IMPORTAZIONE DEL MODELLO Come anticipato nel contributo precedente e come descritto nell’ampia bibliografia disponibile (Brusaporci, 2010; Brusaporci et al., 2011; Centofanti et al., 2008), la metodologia adottata per progettare il SIArch ha previsto, come prima tappa per la definizione dell’architettura del sistema, l’adattamento delle schede conoscitive dei beni monumentali progettate dall’ISCR per la ‘Carta del Rischio del Patrimonio Culturale’. A seguito di tale adattamento è stato progettato un dataset standard da utilizzare per l’applicazione del Sistema Informativo Architettonico ai vari casi di studio. Dal punto di vista metodologico, la progettazione del SIArch ha risentito delle vicende evolutive del software della ESRI (in un primo momento operativo solamente su base bidimensionale) ed infatti, nella prima fase, con l’impiego della suite ArcView 8.2, in cui non era possibile l’importazione di un modello 3D, la terza dimensione è stata approssimata grazie ad una serie di grafici bidimensionali collegati tramite una serie complessa di riferimenti interni e collegamenti ipertestuali. Tale procedura, sebbene macchinosa, ha consentito comunque di saggiare la correttezza della schedatura in relazione al tipo di informazioni che si desiderava integrare all’interno del sistema. A questa fase ne è seguita una intermedia, conseguente al rilascio della release 9.2 del software della ESRI, all’interno della quale risultava possibile la visualizzazione e l’interrogazione di un particolare modello 3D. All’interno del modulo ArcScene della suite ArcGIS, era infatti possibile realizzare una feature di punti cui conferire l’aspetto di elementi solidi specifici (come murature, infissi, elementi di orizzontamento, elementi decorativi, finiture, etc.) modellati in ambienti opportuni (nel nostro caso Autodesk 3D Studio Max). Attraverso questa nuova procedura, che ha comportato oggettive difficoltà relative alla esatta ubicazione spaziale dei singoli elementi importati, si è potuto disporre di una visualizzazione sicuramente più friendly ed immediata della precedente. La fase finale della ricerca è seguita, infine, al rilascio dell’ultima release del software ArcView 9.3, la quale, all’interno del modulo ArcScene, mediante la creazione di una feature definita MultiPatch consente la costruzione di modelli tridimensionali i cui elementi componenti, importati direttamente dai più comuni software di modellazione 3D, sono costruiti in modo da conservare i necessari riferimenti spaziali indispensabili al sistema di geodatabase. La procedura di generazione e importazione del modello consolidata a partire da tale fase (Trizio, 2010), prevede in sintesi la modellazione 3D del manufatto, effettuata in un ambiente di modellazione scelto , spinta sino al più piccolo dettaglio previsto dal terzo livello di schedatura (come ad esempio ciascun particolare decorativo che si desidera schedare, etc.). L’importazione che ne consegue, per complesso di volumi (scheda 01), per beni componenti il complesso (scheda 02) o in singoli elementi del bene componente (scheda 03) risente però dell’uso di limitate estensioni gestite dal software (in particolare .3ds, .skp, .wrl e *.flt) e della macchinosità dovuta all’importazione di ciascun elemento al quale si desidera agganciare delle informazioni, separatamente, o per gruppi tipologici. Questa evidenza determina che ciascun elemento da interrogare deve essere registrato in un unico file, con la conseguenza di produrre una notevole quantità di dati digitali da immagazzinare e preservare, con un notevole dispendio di tempo. A fronte di tali problematiche, che si ritiene possano essere superate con gli sviluppi futuri del software, l’elemento tridimensionale importato all’interno del modulo ArcScene, possiede pertanto gli attributi propri di qualsiasi altra feature class, visualizzabili tramite interrogazione diretta (finestra Identify Results) o attraverso la tabella degli attributi, e mantiene pertanto le sue caratteristiche dimensionali e topologiche (georeferenziazione); infine, se dotato di una texture, conserva la visualizzazione della mappatura assegnata all’interno degli appositi ambienti di modellazione. LE OPERAZIONI DI COLLAUDO Il collaudo del SIArch-Univaq è stato effettuato su numerosi casi di studio, relativi a manufatti architettonici di epoche, tipologie e caratteristiche formali differenti. Di seguito si riporta una descrizione sintetica di alcune applicazioni messe a punto a partire dal 2006. E’ opportuno ribadire che la metodologia alla base di ciascun collaudo è stata la stessa, sebbene di volta in volta adattata alle specificità offerte da ciascun caso di studio.	Translation - English The SIArch-Univaq, an Architectural Information System for Cultural Heritage Romolo Continenza, Ilaria Trizio* DICEAA, University of L’Aquila, Italy; ITC-CNR, Construction Technologies Institute, Italian National Research Council, Italy ABSTRACT SIArch-Univaq is a knowledge-based instrument for the cataloging of historical architectural heritage, created to provide a powerful cognitive tool to all operators interested in studies and conservation. The principle characteristic of this architectural Information System is its notable capacity of in-depth analysis, going down to the identification of all the constructive components with simplicity of consultation, activated by one or more three-dimensional models deliberately created. Conceived at the University of L’Aquila (Italy) it was developed in the framework of research financed with funds from the Ministry for University and Scientific Research made available for projects of relevant national interest (PRIN). This article describes its structure, characteristics and functionalities. Key words: Historic Heritage, Architectural Heritage, Conservation, Restoration, GIS, Risk Evaluation, Italian C.H. GIS FOR ARCHITECTURE The idea of building an information system on and for architecture came from the understanding that currently in order to intervene on cultural assets and buildings, and in all operative phases, a considerable quantity of digital elaborations is created. At the end of the works, of these elaborations remains only an archive of paper records; that which is in digital format, saved principally and copied on discs, and therefore consultable only with difficulty, remains unused until the end of the life of the medium upon which it is saved. If this information were conserved in its original digital format and made accessible, it would be of notable utility for a wide range of uses, not least the programming and execution of successive interventions. The use of digital means stimulates the imagination of the researcher; in fact, if the simple archiving of data were integrated with indexing advantage would be obtained of the vast potential made available by these means. Beyond simple serial research it therefore becomes possible to conduct many types of thematic research based on data, transversal interrogations become possible, meaning the use of all of the associations possible between the indexing criteria selected. With the most recent digital technology the archiving of data is possible not only in a conventional tabular format but also in all possible formats and one can understand how the operative potential of such a form of archiving become wide ranging. Finally, the use of GIS software, other than providing all of the operative possibilities described permits also the availability of data referencing and their associations in a digital model, both at ground level (geo-referencing) and of any other object (e.g. an architectural artifact). THE CHOICES AT THE BASIS OF THE PROJECT Definition of the framework of requirements The idea of producing an architectural database, extremely interesting under a scientific profile, inspired the imagination of we researchers, but also raised a series of problems. The first was the definition of the quantity of material to archive and its quality. Effectively it meant firstly defining precisely the profile of future users and the extent of their requirements. The selection of indexing criteria for the archived files depended directly on this choice. The desire to build a cognitive tool for architecture could not be divided from the definition of the profile of its foreseen future users, to whom in the application phase would be entrusted the compilation, the management, the conservation and the eventual integration, where necessary, of its functionalities. In brief: who was to be our “client”? Who might be interested in this new tool? Who would be interested in taking on the responsibility (and the cost) of its compilation and maintenance? Reversing the perspectives: what interests could its functionalities stimulate? Was the choice of permitting the integration with other products under study or already working in our country correct? The operational choice was to define a product which could be adapted to a very wide range of uses, from the simply curious interested only in obtaining basic information, to the designer interested in the maximum level of detailed information available. Such a wide range and quantity of information available and expected enquiries could have been better organized in s system of modules, organized on different dimensional scales available to potential users individually or totally, depending on their requirements. Going beyond barriers that are artificially created for commercial reasons, as researchers we tend to consider the world of knowledge as an ideal system, completely interconnected, within which it is possible to freely obtain information, but we do not overlook the fact that the manager of this information can restrict access to the information in a selective way, assigning different access criteria to different types of users. From this viewpoint we can summarise the principle uses obtained and the principle users at different levels. At the level of general information the information obtainable is basic related to georeferencing, cataloging of assets, history, peculiar characteristics. Amongst potential managers there is MIBACT (Ministry of assets, cultural activities and tourism) and the Superintendencies, to whom this information could substitute, or better be integrated, with the conventional files in use at the Superintendencies. Other potential managers of the information could be local authorities and in particular regional authorities, which already in many cases manage territorial databases and architectural assets to make them available, by web, to a wide range of users which go from the simple promotion of tourism to students and researchers. In the case of research access to the entire database could be of great use. The base can in fact be interrogated with different criteria and provide new stimuli to scientific research which is important to reach unexpected results. At the level of basic detailed information of the asset/building, the available data are those relating to its state of conservation and any restoration or maintenance works carried out. This is information which could be integrated with the “Risk Map for Architectural heritage” of which it has already been said, support the planning of interventions and the definition of an intelligent strategy for the use of resources. Also in this case the potential users are the Superintendencies, and also the local authorities for a variety of reasons. At the level of greater detail for each individual architectural structure the entire body of information relating to interventions will be available, starting from the readings of all different aspects (geometric, architectural, disrepair etc.) going to the design and enquiries (geological, structural, chemical) that were at the basis of choices made. From the design information comes the detailed documentation of the works carried out, completed with their localization and quantities, accompanied by photographic documentation. It is information that will be of great use to operators. The construction of the restoration and maintenance history of the asset is in fact indispensible for planning and the design of future interventions. To the scenario of the potential users that we have identified, Superintendencies and local authorities, we can add also the designers and operators who will discover through a thorough knowledge of the asset and the interventions that it has undergone, the preconditions for new and appropriate interventions. The operative software The process that led to the choice of adopting a GIS platform for the development of the database, for the importation of models to index for interrogation and for consultation was strongly impacted by the evolution of the available GIS platforms. The formulation, the development and the testing of this Information System started in 2006, while the final testing operations are currently being concluded. An information system for architecture, in the minds of those involved in the project from the initial phases of elaboration, had to allow contact and the approach with the architectural object through its specific three-dimensional form. The idea was to consult directly one or more three-dimensional models of the architectural objects being studied and thereby create a simple and adequate interface for introduction and interrogation of the database. In reality, when the project started in 2006, there were no platforms available able to work in a three-dimensional environment. Even if at the time there were several open source GIS platforms available, for example Grass and Quantum GIS, both working in a two-dimensional environment, having to select a platform on which to work and after many considerations it was decided to focus our attention on ArcView, commercialized by the Californian company ESRI. It was largely used by public administrations for the management of local territorial records, and therefore well tested, it had already developed the use of applications for the web and seemed to be able to guarantee rapid and continuous possibilities for development and updating of the software to new market requirements and therefore also the chance to reach, one day, the possibilities to work directly on three-dimensional models. During the initial programming phase, with the release 8.2 of the ESRI platform and being unable to work on three-dimensional models, we had to resort to the elaboration of a complex structure of returns between representations in plans and a series of significant sections placed together in the best way to be able to examine all elements composing the architectural volume. Only with the release 9.3, issued in 2008, has the platform been implemented in a 3D environment. Since then the adopting of a consultable three-dimensional interface, the central element to the project, has become a really attainable objective. THE SIARCH-UNIVAQ STRUCTURE The choice of articulating the documentation of an architectural asset is based on three different levels of scale: that relating to its general state, from every single component of the structure to that of each single constituting element led to an analogous division in three of the database’s structure. To be able to integrate from the database data taken from the MIBACT known as the “Risk Map for Cultural Heritage”; the labeling model used for the acquisition of data, with some modifications, was that of the ISCR (Istituto Superiore Centrale per il Restauro). In particular, to be able to unify the search criteria and to simplify the activities of the labeler, the hierarchical structure, the lexicon and the vocabulary were conserved and tested widely during the long period of its compilation. The cataloging standards of the ICCD (Istituto Centtrale per il Catalogo e la Documentazione), were also maintained, used in the anagrafic-identification of the building, together with the structure of the file, which consists in a first part dedicated to the identification and the description of the asset and in a second part, the description of its state of conservation. The first labeling phase (Scheda01_SIArch-Unita Complesso Architettonico) concerns the acquisition of general information about the cultural asset considered complex, that is made up of many architectural “components”, distinguishable from each other (for example church, a rustic villa and its outhouses, a convent with church and annexes). In this file, apart from the unique identification of the different component elements considered necessary to separate in the architectural context, and bearing in mind a successive phase of data acquisition, all information relating to its entirety are extracted: identification (ICR, ICCD codes etc), location (region, province, municipality, ISTAT code, geographical references, IGM and cadastre, address etc), description (reference to the context, dimensions and general shape of the building, number of floors etc), historical information (deducible from the MIBAC “A” file), archived documentation (complete with references to the sources and copies of these where possible), the state of the property, judicial state, photographic documentation, dimensions and measurements, the number and identification of qualities, accessibility, the general state of conservation and summary comments, functionality of the services (water, electricity, heating, draining of rainwater, where present). All available documentation is digitalized and associated to the file for eventual and successive importation to and inclusion in the database. On the basis of the subdivision of the architectural complex in single “component” elements it is possible to pass to the second level of labeling (Scheda02_SIArch-Unità Bene Componente), articulated in a number of files equal to each identified “component” element. From these data is extracted, with more detail compared to the previous level, data on: the location of the component with respect to the entirety and its planimetric and elevation profile, described in graphic and dimensional terms. The link to successive files is based on the unique identification of the single units contained in the cd. “component asset”. The files are completed with a series of tables relative to the single construction components: foundations, elevated structures, vertical links, finishes, window and door frames, coverings. From each component all information is extracted useful for a complete description: typology, materials, dimensions, age of construction, state of conservation, a qualitative and quantitative description of any damage noted. All information relative to interventions, maintenance and restoration work is collected in a specific section, completed with relevant documentation where available. Photographic documents complete the files. The third level of labeling (Scheda03_SIArch-Unità Spaziale Vano) relates to the last level of division used, the spatial compartmental unit. Within this and with the information necessary for its unique identification, historical, morphological, graphical descriptions with dimensional data, refinishing materials used and decorations present are necessary to complete this level. Each single element which defines the compartment (elevating structures, frames and installations) is then described in detail. Reported are: materials, dimensions, state of conservation and wherever present, qualitative and quantitative descriptions of any damage. Also in this case a specific section refers to any maintenance or restoration carried out with detailed descriptions, completed with appropriate documentation relating to design, graphic and photographic, and evenaccounts whenever available. INFORMATION COLLECTION AND COMPILATION OF THE DATABASE Initially the collection of the data was done on paper for on-site operations, with a successive phase of reporting the information collected within the system. Successively the work was simplified, thanks also to the evolution of digital instrumentation, by compiling directly, on-site, the data acquisition files, using, for example, a tablet or notebook. Once the operator and the data collection team are identified, together with the authority to which they belong, the date and the place of the compilation, the procedure allows the introduction of information, according to a programmed scheme, up to the closure of the compilation phase. In the same way any successive updating or integrating operation necessary can be managed. Even if possible, at the moment direct data introduction from the web is not foreseen. Once compilation is complete on the different files the operator, after authentication, is asked to load the data acquired into the general database. ENQUIRY SUPPORT FOR THE DATABASE The problems linked to the construction and the importing to the Information System of enquiry support to the database, are covered in a paragraph below, here we will explain their role in the articulation of the information system and to give an idea of the existing coherence between the structuring of the data and the consistence of the model. The models designed to act as enquiry support to the database follow, in fact, the division in three areas of the information registered in the files. The first level of enquiry is based on cartography and the oriented plan of the terrain, upon which are based the information in the SIArch_01 file already mentioned. The principle information contained here are the geo-references of the asset, its relationship within the context of its location, its description and finally its separation in a number of finite components of which it is constructed. The enquiry model referring to the second level (Scheda 02_SIArch – Unità bene component) consists of the three-dimensional model of the components of the building, correctly geo-referenced and placed within the terrain model mentioned in the previous point. Its articulation in the number of parts revealed in the file 02 permits the strict and rigorous indexation of its contents. The model relating to the subdivision into greater detail (Scheda 03_SIArch – Unità spaziale vano) consists of the digital three-dimensional representation of the relevant spatial unit, also articulated in a number of constituting elements under the relative file, the indexation of each single element, and also here in an unmistakable way. CONSTRUCTION AND IMPORTATION OF THE MODEL As already mentioned previously and as thoroughly described in the literature available (Brusaporci, 2010; Brusaporci et al., 2011; Centofanti et al., 2008), the methodology adopted to design SIArch foresaw, as a first stage towards the definition of the system’s architecture, the adapting of the informative files on monumental assets compiled by the ISCR for the “Risk Map for Cultural Heritage”. Following this adaptation a standard dataset was designed for the application of the Architectural Information System to the various case studies. From a methodological point of view, the design of SIArch was impacted by the evolution of the ESRI software (which initially worked only on a two-dimensional basis) and in fact, in the first phase, with the use of the ArcView 8.2 suite, where the importation of a 3D model was not possible, the third dimension was approximated thanks to a series of two-dimensional graphics connected by a complex series of internal references and hyper textual links. This process, even if complex, permitted the testing of the correctness of files in connection with the type of information to be integrated within the system. An intermediate phase followed, after the release 9.2 of the ESRI software, within which visualization and enquiries of specific 3D models were made possible. Within the ArcScene module of the ArcGIS suite it was in fact possible to introduce features relating to specific solid elements (walls, frames, decorative elements, re-finishing etc.) modeled in appropriate environments (in our case Autodesk 3D Studio Max). With this new process, which brought difficulties related to the exact spatial location of the individual important elements, a more friendly and immediate visualization than before was made possible. The final research phase followed the last release 9.3 of the ArcView software which within the ArcScene module and with the creation of a feature defined MultiPatch permited the construction of three-dimensional models with component elements imported directly from the most diffused 3D modeling software, designed in such a way as to conserve the necessary spatial references indispensible for the geo-database system. The procedure for generating and importing consolidated models from this phase (Trizio, 2010) foresees in synthesis the 3D modeling of the building, in a selected modeling environment, driven by the smallest detail foreseen within the third level of file (for example each decorative detail contained in the file). The importation that follows, by all of the volumes (scheda 01), by the large-scale components (scheda 02), or by the single component elements (scheda 03) is limited by the extension managed by the software (in particular .3ds, .skp, .wrl e * flt) and the complexity due to the importation of each element to which information is to be linked either separately or by types of group. This evidence determines that each element to be interrogated must be registered in a unique file, with the consequence of producing a considerable quantity of digital data to store and conserve, with a heavy investment of time. To tackle these problems, which we retain can be resolved with future software developments, the three-dimensional element imported from the ArcScene module possesses the attributes for whatever other feature class, visible by direct interrogation (Identify Results window) or through the attribution table, and maintains its dimensional and topographic characteristics (geo-referencing); finally, if there is also texturing, the visualization of assigned mapping within the modeling environments can be maintained. THE TESTING OPERATIONS Testing of the SIArch-Univaq was done with numerous case studies on historical architectural structures with different typologies, characteristics and formats. A synthetic description of certain applications effected since 2006 follows. It is important to underline that the basic methodology used for each test was the same, even if each time adapted to the specificity of each individual case.
Italian to English: Città-Campagna City-Countryside General field: Tech/Engineering
Source text - Italian CITTA’-CAMPAGNA Riflessioni su due apparenti opposti La partecipazione ad un’esperienza internazionale di progetto e’ sempre, per ogni studente, come anche per i docenti, occasione di arricchimento. Lavorare assieme a persone provenienti da altri paesi e’ una preziosa occasione di confronto fra approcci culturali ed operativi diversi fra loro. Durante il periodo in cui si lavora assieme si impara a conoscere ed a convivere con le numerose differenze dovute alle diverse visioni del mondo, alle modalita’ di insegnamento caratteristiche di ogni scuola d’architettura come anche con le modalita’ d’approccio e socializzazione proprie di ogni identita’ nazionale. L’esperienza della Winter school 2014 svoltasi presso la Gazi University di Ankara e’ stata particolarmente innovativa, si e’ voluto sperimentare un approccio didattico diverso dagli altri, basato sulla sperimentazione del rapporto fra arte ed architettura, e’ stato richiesto, infatti, di progettare la comunicazione di un messaggio disciplinare attraverso la sua messa in scena. Naturalmente nessuno dei protagonisti di quella esperienza era un attore e forse per questo il doversi mettere in gioco personalmente e per il tempo, piuttosto lungo, di un a rappresentazione ha toccato tutti nel profondo. Le fasi della elaborazione progettuale proposta dovevano essere: la individuazione del tema, il confronto sulle modalità di approccio all’argomento proposte da ogni partecipante, il raggiungimento di una sintesi e la sua comunicazione attraverso il progetto di una scenografia ed una drammatizzazione. L’intera esperienza proposta ruotava attorno alla spirale composta da: un tema, un progetto, la sua drammatizzazione. Ai tutor invitati l’onere di proporre un tema e di avviare le prime mosse della sua articolazione, al fine di promuovere e stimolare un dibattito creativo fra i diversi membri del gruppo, instructors and students, destinato a definire i contenuti del messaggio da proporre nei termini di rappresentazione scenica. Diana Giallonardo, molto più esperta di me sul terreno dell’approccio scenico (le mie esperienze piu’ recenti sul campo risalgono agli anni ’70), ha curato l’iniziazione degli studenti alla gestualità ed alla interazione scenica, fornendo gli strumenti di base indispensabili all’uso comunicativo ed interattivo del corpo ed ha avviato, nel corso della prima settimana la riflessione sui temi che le ho chiesto di proporre. La scelta dell’argomento di progetto era cosa non semplice, doveva essere, infatti, ben noto a tutti, essere già stato oggetto di studio ma ancora ricco di spunti e prospettive. Per questo motivo la scelta è caduta sul rapporto fra Citta’ e Campagna. Si chiedeva l’approfondimento dei rispettivi significati, la riflessione su alcune loro specifiche attribuzioni attraverso una serie di approfondimenti che avessero inizio e termine con due fra i principali temi (topoi) del progetto d’architettura: lo spazio e la forma. Qualita’ dello spazio Per iniziare correttamente il discorso dobbiamo invocare il principio platonico di non contraddizione, il quale postula che una cosa, deve essere se’ stessa e non altro. Vedremo, al termine di questo testo, quanto oggi questo principio sia continuamente, e malauguratamente, contraddetto ma, per svolgere in maniera piana il nostro ragionamento proviamo a definire in maniera chiara e sistematica entrambi gli oggetti della nostra riflessione. La prima chiave interpretativa proposta è quella qualità dello spazio. Lo spazio della citta’ Principale caratteristica dello spazio della città è quella di essere de-limitato. La storia antica ci consegna la narrazione di molti eroi, fondatori di citta’ nell’atto di compiere, preliminarmente, il rito della definizione del perimetro del nuovo insediamento, su quel segno verrà avviata la costruzione delle mura, del recinto, elemento primigenio che qualifica la città. Effettuata la scelta il luogo, sulla scorta dei suoi valori simbolici, strategici o funzionali, l’atto della fondazione non può essere che quello della costruzione (edificazione) del limite fisico del sito. Lo spazio della città, come quello di ogni altra cosa vivente (dalla cellula, in poi), di necessità deve essere de-finito, de-limitato, racchiuso da mura. L’icona della città, dall’inizio della sua storia, non potrà essere che quella delle sue mura, e cioè l’immagine che appare che di se’, per prima, è mostrata al viandante, a colui che attraversa il territorio. Quella stessa immagine sarà da questi raccontata per prima al rientro dal viaggio. La città è, quindi, per definizione un luogo de-limitato, de-finito, rin-chiuso, separato dal suo territorio, un evento in se’ con-tenuto e con-cluso. Anche sotto il profilo del linguaggio tutte le parole che abbiamo usato sin qui rimandano al concetto di limite, di chiusura, di conclusione in sè stesso dell’evento urbano. (delimit, define, circumscribe, mark) La città è, quindi, prima di tutto uno spazio protetto, che fa nascere (o nasce dallo) lo spirito di comunità e di collettività, cui il cittadino per appartenenza. Il fenomeno urbano ha quindi luogo all’interno delle mura, le sue porte ne dischiudono l’evento; le sue strade, le sue piazze ne definiranno il carattere e le qualità. Lo spazio della campagna Il primo degli attributi dello spazio della campagna che viene in mente è quello di uno spazio libero, dai confini sono in-definiti, meglio, non-definiti. La campagna è vicina alla condizione primordiale del rapporto dell’uomo con l’intorno naturale. Se proviamo a ragionare per negazioni possiamo affermare che la campagna è altro rispetto alla città ed è anche altro rispetto alla selva ed al monte. Fra questi due limiti fisici: la città e la selva, si estende uno spazio –quello della campagna- regolato dall’uomo, anche se un pò meno di quello urbano. Con una definizione più legata alla condizione attuale possiamo individuare la campagna come l’insieme di luoghi dedicati alle produzioni agricole, prevalentemente destinate alla città. LE ATTIVITA’ DELL’UOMO Una secondo modo che abbiamo per qualificare la città è quella delle attività che al suo interno vi sono svolte e del modo in cui vi hanno luogo. La presenza in un luogo de-limitato di una moltitudine di persone tende ad esaltare le capacità individuali dei suoi abitanti, inducendo la specializzazione delle attività. Se una persona riesce a far bene una certa cosa puo’ farla non soltanto per sè stessa ma anche per gli altri. Questa, a sua volta, potrà valersi del contributo di altri per ottenere, ben fatto, ciò che non sa fare. Ciascun individuo potrà, quindi, ottenere ciò di cui ha bisogno, pagandolo con l’assunzione di un ruolo specifico. è questo il meccanismo logico che assegna ad ogni cittadino un ben preciso ruolo sociale. La città induce e favorisce la specializzazione delle attività umane. Effetto di questa specializzazione nasce la differenziazione degli spazi all’interno del recinto urbano. Dentro la città troviamo, così, luoghi per l’igiene, per specifiche produzioni, luoghi per l’amministrazione, per la giustizia, per la cura dell’anima e molti altri ancora. Questa organizzazione e differenziazione dello spazio fisico della città induce, alla lunga, la separazione fra abitazione e luogo di lavoro ed alla nascita di una serie di spostamenti quotidiani interni alla città. Il lavoro in campagna ha due caratteristiche che lo rendono profondamente diverso da quello in città: innanzitutto non è rigidamente differenziato ed, infine, è ciclico. Al contadino sono richieste una miriade di attività, dentro e fuori la sua abitazione. Molto più che in città, il contadino è forzato a seguire il ritmo delle stagioni, degli estri degli animali, come anche le oscillazioni del tempo meteorologico. Queste peculiarità contribuiscono a conservare nell’uomo il senso di appartenenza ad un contesto naturale, potente, se non unica cura per il senso di angoscia che la dimensione umana prova di fronte alla morte. IL (trascorrere del) TEMPO Il tempo in città è organizzato in funzione delle attività quotidiane, il suo passare è scansito dai ritmi della produzione e dei servizi. La città è animata dallo spostamento, per lavoro, di merci e persone, i suoi spazi sono animati da persone in movimento che rendono pulsante di vita la scena urbana, mentre le strade sono occupate, quando non intasate, da mezzi in movimento. Anche la separazione fra casa e luogo di lavoro, è occasione di quotidiani e massicci spostamenti, prevalentemente in orari fissi, e contribuisce a rendere convulso il ritmo della vita. In campagna il tempo accompagna la fatica dell’uomo regolandone il ritmo di vita in consonanza con il trascorrere ciclico degli eventi di natura. Lo spostamento quotidiano da e verso il campo, l’uscita con gli animali per il pascolo, le diverse attività agricole (colturali) sono regolati dall’andamento stagionale e di tanto in tanto (talora) alterati dagli eventi eccezionali della natura: piene, le inondazioni, carestie, morti, parti, nascite. ARTIFICIO E NATURA Non C’è dubbio che la città sia il luogo dell’artificio (Artis-facio). Fatti con arte sono, ad esempio: le mura, gli edifici, le pavimentazioni, i materiali che ne costituiscono gli spazi. Artificiali, nel senso di non naturali, sono, anche, i modi in cui la società è organizzata, come ad esempio, la stratificazione per sesso, per ruolo, attività lavorativa, censo, classi d’età. In campagna la natura è, ancora, dominante. I ritmi circadiano, stagionale, climatico sono la regola che governa lo svolgimento delle attività. L’uomo, in questo contesto, si industria nel cercare di rendere compatibili i suoi bisogni produttivi con le esigenze della natura. Quanto maggiore è il suo successo in questo lavoro tanto più egli riesce a condizionare e rendere un pò più artificiale la porzione di natura sulla quale interviene. Ha senso imporre in campagna, su vasta scala, l’artificio alla natura? Fino a quale punto la natura è disponibile a sostenere, senza conseguenze, la violenza della mano dell’uomo? Siamo certi di essere in grado di avere il controllo di eventuali, pericolose reazioni? FORMA DELLA CITTA’ E FORMA DELLA CAMPAGNA Nell’immaginario umano la forma della città è strettamente associata al modo nel quale essa viene percepita ed ai valori simbolici che le vengono attribuiti. Gerusalemme, luogo fisico, ma soprattutto spirituale, è stata sovente percepita come la città perfetta, il luogo ove in terra sono realizzati valori dello spirito. Essa, così come la favolosa ed antichissima Babilonia, sono prevalentemente rappresentate, nell’iconografia antica, con una forma circolare. Con quella che è, agli occhi dell’uomo, la figura perfetta, autonoma, racchiusa in sè stessa. Ai quattro assi che la attraversano ortogonalmente, corrispondono nella dimensione fisica i punti cardinali, in quella metaforico-simbolica, gli elementi fondanti dell’idea dell’universo ed in quella religiosa, la croce. Roma, città della forza e della guerra, nelle rappresentazioni simboliche, si vede attribuita la forma quadrata, solida e tetragona (tetra gonos, munita di quattro angoli). Ha la forma che viene riconosciuta alla sede dell’impero, solida, stabile, spigolosa, dura da sconfiggere. Se spostiamo la nostra attenzione dalla forma simbolica a quella reale ci viene da pensare alle città di fondazione nella storia ed alla chiarezza del loro impianto formale. Pensiamo alle antiche città orientali, agli impianti urbani concepiti la prima volta da Ippodamo di Mileto. Pensiamo, anche, allo schema cardo-decumanico che ha dato forma a tutte le città fondate dai romani, ma anche da quanti a loro sono succeduti. Naturale evoluzione di questo schema urbano estremamente semplice, ma chiaro nella sua impostazione concettuale, sono gli studi rinascimentali sulla città ideale, ad iniziare da quelli di Leonardo da Vinci, che hanno condotto, in Italia in Europa –ma non solo-, a realizzazioni perfette nelle loro geometrie. Basterà citare soltanto alcuni esempi di geometrie ideali tradotte in realizzazioni concrete, come ad esempio, le piante a forma di stella di Palmanova (I), di Den Briel (NL), di Hamina (FIN), in Europa, ma anche dei nuclei urbani di Hakodate e di Usuda in Giappone. Un modo di concepire il tessuto urbano che ha improntato di sè anche numerose architetture militari realizzate in Europa sperimentando e perfezionando le teorie di antichi trattati d’architettura e poi esportate oltremare al tempo della colonizzazione delle Americhe e dell’Asia . L’insediamento in campagna, in particolare la cosiddetta “Villa extraurbana”, ha anch’esso un forte radicamento nella storia dell’architettura. I primi insediamenti di questo tipo, documentati dalla ricerca archeologica sono quelli romani. La Villa Romana occupava una porzione piuttosto ampia di territorio ed era un sistema complesso ed efficiente. Le sue ampie corti, chiuse all’esterno, erano almeno tre, la prima, piu’ suntuosa, era occupata dai proprietari, la seconda era destinata allo svolgimento di tutti i servizi domestici (cucine, forni, lavanderie, alloggi della servitu’) ed infine, la terza era il luogo dedicato alle attivita’ agricole, ove erano custoditi gli attrezzi, ricoverati gli animali, svolte le attivita’ di trasformazione dei prodotti . La villa era, quindi, predisposta non soltanto per garantire il riposo del proprietario e dei suoi ospiti, ma era anche concepita come un’azienda agraria in grado di produrre reddito e beni di consumo . Dal tempo dei romani in poi la residenza di campagna si afferma con la doppia valenza di residenza di piacere, destinata ad esibire l’opulenza dei proprietari ed a garantir loro il sollievo dal caldo della citta’, ma anche come struttura agraria per la produzione di reddito e derrate, conservando a lungo queste caratteristiche, seppure con diverse declinazioni, nella storia dell’architettura europea. saranno luoghi di svago e di produzione tanto le ville italiane, che quelle francesi ed inglesi, costruite dal rinascimento sino a tutto l’ottocento. L’arte e la letteratura ci danno conto di questo assetto con un’infinita’ di pitture ma anche di cronache, drammi, commedie, romanzi, film da Goldoni sino a Peter Greenaway. LA SITUAZIONE ATTUALE Il panorama semplice e lineare che abbiamo sin qui descritto e’ profondamente alterato oggi dall’intervento dell’uomo. Gli attributi che, grazie al principio di non contraddizione abbiamo sin qui riconosciuto ai due termini del nostro pensare nel mondo d’oggi acquistano contorni piu’ sfumati ed indefiniti. L’impronta dell’uomo e’ stata capace di indurre mutamenti e cambiamenti di senso profondi. La campagna e’ molto cambiata rispetto alle condizioni che abbiamo preso in considerazione: le aziende e gli operatori legati ad una impostazione produttiva tradizionale, basata sulla conservazione della biodiversita’, sulla integrazione fra colture e fra coltura ed allevamento occupano, nel panorama complessivo attuale, una posizione di assoluta marginalita’. Il desiderio, legittimo, di incrementare i ricavi aumentando la produttivita’ ha imposto quasi ovunque la pratica della monocoltura, la specializzazione delle aziende ed una spinta industrializzazione dei processi con conseguenti forti investimenti in macchinari ed attrezzature. Questo nuovi assetto, se da un canto consente di ottenere maggiori profitti, dall’altro aumenta grandemente la vulnerabilita’ delle aziende. Un evento eccezionale, come inattesa epidemia o una stagione avversa danneggiando il raccolto di un’intera stagione, puo’ pregiudicare, talora irreparabilmente, la solidita’ economica degli operatori. La dipendenza dal mercato globale per le forniture di sementi e per la vendita del prodotto espone la nuova figura di agricoltore “industrializzato” ad una serie di rischi che egli stesso non e’ piu’ in grado di controllare . La citta’, d’altro canto, non e’ da meno. Il centro racchiuso nella cinta delle mura e’ ormai una porzione del tutto trascurabile della sua realta’ fenomenica, una estesissima pletora di periferie senza qualita’ lo assediano soffocandolo. Il mito dell’espansione ha divorato la campagna, ampliando a dismisura la cinta urbana. Capannoni, strade e grandi spianate di parcheggi si estendono, apparentemente senza regola, al di fuori del tessuto urbano dando luogo ad una situazione inedita. Nasce cosi’ un qualcosa che non obbedisce piu’ al principio di non contraddizione, e’, allo stesso tempo citta’ e campagna, meglio, allo stesso tempo riesce ad essere ne’ citta’ ne’ campagna, nella accezione che abbiamo appreso e che ci riesce di comprendere. Cio’ che, piu’ di ogni altra cosa, sorprende in tutto cio’ e’ il modo nel quale subiamo in maniera passiva queste situazioni, accettando la perdita di senso e di significato di questi due termini, apparentemente antitetici della presenza umana sul territorio.	Translation - English CITY-COUNTRYSIDE Considerations on two apparently diametrical opposites The involvement in an international project is always, for students, as well as for teachers, an enriching experience. Working together with people coming from other countries is a valuable opportunity to compare varied cultural and operational approaches. During the work everybody learns to understand and to live with the remarkable differences due to different visions of the world, to the teaching methods that characterize each school of architecture as well as the approach and socialization methods connected with each national identity. The experience of the 2014 Winter School held at the Gazi University in Ankara was particularly innovative. It was aimed at experiencing a very different teaching approach, based on testing the relationship between art and architecture. It was required, indeed, to communicate a disciplinary message through its realization. Of course, none of the participants of that experience was an actor, and perhaps for this reason being personally involved in a representation for a long period of time deeply moved everyone. The phases of the elaboration of the project proposed were: the identification of the topic; the comparison on how to approach the topic proposed by each participant; the achievement of a synthesis and its communication through the design of the set and a dramatization. The proposed experience turned around a nucleus consisting in: a theme, a project and its dramatization. Guest tutors were asked to propose a topic and start with the first move of its development, in order to promote and stimulate a creative debate amongst the different members of the group, instructors and students, with the aim of defining the contents of the message to be proposed in terms of visual representation. Diana Giallonardo, much more experienced than me in the ground of the scenic approach (my most recent experience in this field dates back to the '70s), was responsible for the initiation of students to gestures and scenic interaction, providing the basic tools essential for a communicative and interactive use of the body. She, during the first week, launched the topics that I asked her to propose. Chosing the project theme was not simple , it had to be, indeed, well known to all participants, being already the subject of a study, but still full of ideas and perspectives. For this reason, the choice fell on the relationship between “City and Countryside”. It was necessary to examine in depth their meanings, to think about some of their specific functions, through a series of insights that could begin and end with two of the main themes (topoi) of the architectural project: space and shape. Quality of the space To start the discussion we needed to properly invoke the Platonic principle of non-contradiction, which stipulates that a thing must be itself and nothing else. We'll see at the end of this text, how much this principle today is repeatedly and regrettably, contradicted, but to clearly develop our reasoning we try to define in a clear and systematic way both objects of our thinking. The first proposed key to interpretation is the quality of space. Space in the city The main feature of space in a city is that it is defined. Ancient history tells us stories of many heroes, founders of cities, in the act, initially as a ritual, of defining the boundaries, and over these signs the construction of the enclosure walls, a primordial element which qualified the city. Chosen the place, on the basis of its symbolic, strategic or functional values, the act of foundation had to be the construction of the physical boundary of the site. The space of the city, like that of every other living being (starting from the cell), has to be de-fined, de-limited, enclosed by walls. The icon of the city, from the beginning of its history, has to be that of its walls, the first image that appears to the traveler approaching by land or sea.. The same image will be recountedby him on his return home. The city is, therefore, by definition, a de-limited, de-fined, and circumscribed place, separated from its territory, an event which in itself is re-straining and concluded. Even in terms of language all the words we have used so far refer to the concept of limits, enclosures, the conclusion of the urban experience. The city, therefore, is first of all a protected space, which gives or stems from the spirit of community and collectivity, which belongs to the citizen. The urban phenomenon then takes place within the walls, its gates will open up the event; its streets, its squares will define its character and quality. Space in the countryside The first attribute that comes to mind of space in the countryside is that of freedom , the boundaries are un-defined, or rather not-defined. The countryside is close to the primordial condition of man's relationship with the natural environment. If we try to think in negatives, we can say that the countryside is not the city and neither forests nor mountains. Between these two physical constraints: the city and the forest, lies the space of the countryside a place controlled by man, albeit a little less than the urban one. With a definition more linked to the current condition we can identify the country as the set of sites devoted to agricultural production, mainly destined to the city. Man-made activities A second way that qualifies the city is to look at the activities that are carried out inside it and the way in which they are carried out. The presence, in a de-limited place of a great number of people tends to enhance the individual capabilities of its inhabitants, causing the specialization of activities. If a person succeeds in doing well a certain activity he can do it not only for himself but also for others. He, in turn, can benefit of the assistance of others one to obtain, well done, what he is not able to do. Each one can therefore obtain what he needs, paying it by assuming a specific role. This is the logical mechanism that gives each citizen a well-defined social role. The city induces and promotes the specialization of human activities. As a result of this specialization the differentiation of spaces grows within the urban perimeter. Inside the city there are therefore sites for hygiene, for specific production, places for administration, for justice, for the care of the soul, and many more. This organization and differentiation of the physical spaces inside the city leads, in the long run, to the separation between housing and working places and the need of daily house towork transfers within the city. Work in the countryside has two features that make it quite different from what happens in the city: firstly, it is not strictly differentiated and, secondly is cyclical. A farmer needs to perform a myriad of activities, inside and outside his home. Much more than in the city, the farmer is forced to follow the rhythm of the seasons, the biology of animals, as well as the fluctuations of the weather. These features help to give man a sense of belonging in a natural, powerful context, the best therapy to the anguish that the humans feel about death. Time (that goes by) Time in the city is organized on the basis of daily activities, its transition is punctuated by the rhythms of production and services. The city is animated by the transfer of goods and people, its spaces are animated by people on the move that make the urban scene lively, while the streets are busy, when not blocked, from moving vehicles. Even the separation between home and the workplace is the reason for daily and massive displacements, mostly at fixed times, and contributes to the present, frantic rhythm of life. In the countryside, the weather accompanies man’s labor, adjusting the rhythm of life in consonance with the passing of the cyclic events of nature. The daily transfer to and from the fields, the taking the animals for grazing, the different agricultural activities are governed by the seasonal trends, and occasionally altered by the nature’s exceptional events: floods, famine, death, births. ARTEFACTS AND NATURE There is no doubt that the city is the place of artefacts (artis-facio), made with craft, the walls, the buildings, the flooringsand the materials that create the spaces. Artificial meaning not natural, is also the social organization, for instance, stratification by sex, role, job, wealth, age classes and so on. In the countryside, nature is still dominant. The cyclical, seasonal, climatic rhythm is the rule that governs activities. Man, in this context, strives to harmonize his production needs with the needs of nature. The greater his success in this struggle the more he is able to influence and make a little more artificial the nature upon which he is able to intervene. Does it make sense to impose upon the countryside, on a large scale, artifacts to nature? To what point can nature support, without consequences, the violence of man's hand? Are we confident to be able to control of potentially, dangerous reactions? THE SHAPE THE CITY AND THE COUNTRYSIDE In human imagination the shape of the city is closely associated with the manner in which it is perceived and with its symbolic values. Jerusalem, a physical, but also spiritual place, was often perceived as the perfect city, the place on earth with spiritual values. It, together with the stunning and ancient Babylon, are mainly represented, in ancient iconography, byh a circular shape. With what is, in the eyes of man, the perfect figure, autonomous, enclosed in itself. The four axes that cross straight in the physical dimension match the cardinal points, in the metaphorical and symbolic dimensions the basic elements of the idea of the universe and, in the religious one, the holy cross. Rome, the city of force and war, in symbolic representations, has the attributes of the square shape, solid and tetragonal (tetra gonos - equipped with four corners). It has a form that is recognized to the site (location) of the empire, solid, stable, sharp-cornered (hard-edged), hard to defeat. If we shift our attention from the symbolic form to the real one new towns in history with clarity of formal structure come to mind. . Also the ancient oriental cities come to mind, urban installations conceived the first time by Hippodamus from Miletus, Together with Athe cardo-decumanus scheme which gave shape not only to all the cities founded by the Romans, but also by their followers. A natural evolution of this extremely simple but conceptually clear urban scheme , were the Renaissance studies on the ideal city, starting from the studies of Leonardo da Vinci, which led, mostly in Italy and in Europe (but not only) to perfect geometrical creations. It is worth mentioning a few examples of ideal geometries translated into concrete realizations, such as the sites in the star shape of: Palmanova (I), Den Briel (NL), Hamina (FIN), and also the urban centers Hakodate and Usuda in Japan. A way of designing urban fabrics that gave shape to numerous military architectures in Europe, experimenting and refining the theories of ancient architectural treatises, then exported overseas during the time of colonization of the Americas and Asia. The countryside settlement, especially the so-called "extra-urban villa", has also strong origins in the history of architecture. The first settlements of this type, as discovered by archaeological excavations came from the Romans. The Roman Villa occupied a quite large part of the territory and was complex and efficient. Its spacious courtyards, closed from the outside, were at least three: the first, more wealthy, was dedicated to the owners, the second was intended for the development of all domestic services (kitchens, bakeries, laundries, apartments, servants and so on) and finally, the third was dedicated to the farmers activities, with the stables the warehouses, the places in which the products were transformed. The villa was therefore designed not only as a resting place for the owner and his guests, but also as a farm for producing income and consumer goods. From Roman times onwards, the country residence preserved for a long time both functions: a residence for pleasure, intended to show the wealth of its owners and to grant them relief from the heat of the city, as well as a farm for producing income and foods. Places of entertainment and production were Italian, as well as the French and English villas, built from the Renaissance time until the end of the nineteenth century. Art and literature give us accounts of this situation with not only a series of paintings but also chronicles, dramas, comedies, novels, films, from Carlo Goldoni to Peter Greenaway. The current situation The simple and straightforward panorama that we have described so far has been profoundly altered by human intervention. The attributes that, thanks to the principle of non-contradiction we have so far recognized in the terms of city and countryside in today's world have more blurred and indefinite contours. Man's mark has produced profound alterations and changes of meaning. The countryside has greatly changed compared to the conditions that we have taken into account: the farms and farmers that preserve the traditional manufacturing system, based on the conservation of biodiversity , on the integration between crops and between crops and livestock occupy today a absolute marginal position. The legitimate desire to increase revenue by increased productivity has imposed almost everywhere the practice of monoculture, the specialization of farms and the industrialization of the processes, leading to heavy investment in machinery and equipment. This new structure, on the one hand, tends to grant more profits, on the other hand greatly increases the vulnerability of the farmers. An exceptional event, such as an unexpected outbreak or an bad season damaging the crop of an entire season, can damage, sometimes irreparably, the economic stability of farmers. Dependence on a global market in supplying seeds and in selling products exposes this new "industrialized" farmer to a number of risks that up to now he has not able to control. The city, on the other hand, is not any different. The old city enclosed by walls is now a negligible portion of the city's current reality, with a plethora of very extensive suburbs with no qualities that surround and choke it. The myth of expansion has consumed the countryside, dramatically expanding the urban boundary. Warehouses, roads and large parking lots, broaden themselves apparently without rule, outside the urban area, giving rise to a new situation. Something has grown that no longer obeys the principle of non-contradiction, that is, at the same time city and countryside. In other words, it manages at the same time to be neither city nor countryside in the way we learnt and that we can understand. What more than anything else is surprising is the way in which these situations are experienced passively, accepting the loss of sense and meaning of these two terms, seemingly contradictory of human presence on earth.

Hi, I'm Laura...thank you for visiting my profile!
My mothertongues are both Italian and English; my mum's Italian and my dad's English.
I grew up speaking, reading and writing both languages and i feel so lucky about it!
I attended the European School of Varese where I could practice both languages; my teachers were all mothertongues and my school mates came from different nationalities...so English was always on my way!
I then attended a private Linguistic School, managed by German nuns....so,as you can immagine, my education has been quite strict, but definitely efficient!
While I was attending the University of Interpreters and translators, I started my first translating jobs.
I was employed by the Juvinile Court as interpreter and translator from Italian to English.
I made translations for the Engineering Faculty of the University of L'Aquila, and video-presented projects and workshops and subtitled them from Italian to English.
