Source text - English Drama doesn’t ask you for an alienated judgement, because it deals with nobody else’s case but yours. It is as if you were watching some Agatha Christie murder mystery: the inspector is moving closer and closer to the
solution, then he comes down the stage, walks into the audience, reaches your seat and says: “The murderer is you.” That’s why Brecht is wrong. Brecht sees the chorus as the real society, the community – so he reduces the play to the chorus. This is what he should do – but he does
not see that everyone in the chorus is Oedipus, Antigone, Hecuba, Medea. He ends with an abstraction –and a human abstraction is a prison. The stage is us, not an abstract calculation.
Then you can accept responsibility for yourself and the world. When this is sorted out it is a basis for a democratic relationship to the world –and democracy is not other people: it is you.
Translation - Italian Il dramma non ti chiede un giudizio alienato, perché non affronta nessun altro caso che il tuo. È come se stessi guardando qualche giallo di Agatha Christie: l’ispettore si avvicina sempre di più alla soluzione, poi arriva sul proscenio, cammina in mezzo al pubblico, arriva al tuo posto e dice: “L’assassino sei tu.” È per questo che Brecht si sbaglia. Egli vede nel coro la società reale, la comunità – e quindi riduce la pièce al coro. È questo quel che dovrebbe fare – ma non si accorge che tutti nel coro sono Edipo, Antigone, Ecuba, Medea. Termina con un’astrazione – e l’astrazione umana è una prigione. Il palcoscenico siamo noi, non un calcolo astratto. Allora potrai accettare la responsabilità di te stesso e del mondo.
