Source text - English What was the thicker darkness that flowed along endlessly by the road ? Trees ? Could they have been driving, ever since they left the city, among trees ? The English word came into mind : « forest ». They would not come out suddenly into the desert. The trees went on and on , on the next hillside and the next and the next, standing in the sweet chill of the fog, endless, a forest all over the world, a still striving interplay of lives, a dark movement of leaves in the night. Then as Lupus sat marveling, as the car came up out of the fog of the river valley into clearer air, they looked at him from the darkness under the roadside foliage, for one instant, a face.
Translation - French Qu’était-ce la profonde noirceur qui passait incessamment le long de la route? Des arbres? Auraient-ils conduit parmi les arbres depuis qu’ils avaient quitté la métropole? Le mot français « forêt » lui revenait en tête. Ils n'arriveraient pas soudainement dans le désert. Les arbres défilaient toujours, sur le prochain flanc de colline, encore et encore, dressés dans la douce fraîcheur brumeuse, sans fin, une forêt qui s’étendait sur le monde entier, une interaction de vies qui s’acharnent encore, un sombre mouvement de feuilles dans la nuit. Puis, pendant que Lupus s’émerveillait, que la voiture émergeait du brouillard de la vallée fluviale dans un endroit plus dégagé, ils le regardèrent de l’obscurité sous le feuillage au côté de la route, et pendant un instant, un visage.
