Source text - English A Critical Community Under Threat: For seven decades NYC has depended on public housing as a primary resource for providing affordable housing to low income New Yorkers. NYCHA, now over 180,000 households in over 340 developments across the city, has become the largest and most successful public housing program in the nation. In addition to providing stable housing for families, it has also provided stable employment for many--both residents and non-residents. But its vital communities are now under threat because of shrinking government funding. Government must step up and take responsibility for its share of NYCHA operating costs.
Issue/ Problem: For the past decade, all three levels of government have withdrawn from their commitment to public housing. This disinvestment has led to NYCHA’s current budget crisis - an operating deficit of $225 million dollars this year alone! 21,000 units of city/ state-assisted public housing in New York City receive no operating subsidies and account for a third of NYCHA’s annual deficit. There is a very real danger that these units might be sold by NYCHA to relieve the operating burden, displacing thousands of low-income residents. The deficit has also forced NYCHA to make critical cuts to maintenance staff which will result in growing disrepair and further deterioration of NYC public housing.
