That's diffcult to say and pick one (if the question is related to our profession), but as someone who has always been fascinated by ancient civilizations, I would say... Alexander the Great, conqueror and military genius, he extended the Greek culture throughout the known world during the Hellenistic period.

Obviously my parents, but also various teachers. Mrs Fyfe, whose broomstick we never quite managed to catch sight of and who only ever spoke in French, leaving most of us bewildered at first but then pushing us up the steepest of learning curves, Mr Cook who wrote in my school report of my "refreshing originality" and told us of his travels through Europe, the history teacher whose name I can't remember who taught us about Gandhi and the revolutions of the 20th century, Mr Hogben who in my last ...
