Source text - English Alyria Marn could not sleep. Not only was it too humid, but her mind refused to release her to rest, if only the intermittent kind of respite. How was it possible for thoughts, so terribly random, to swirl round and around as if on a goddamned tilt-a-whirl and at full bloody speed too?
Heaving out a cross between a growl and a sigh, she kicked the thin sheet serving as covering – covered only because one had to hide from mosquitoes in this sticky weather – and padded barefooted to the bathroom.
Faint glows from the streetlight further along meant she wouldn’t stub her toe on something unseen. Jenna, her housemate, tended to drop stuff as she dashed about, and left whatever it was exactly where it fell.
Allowing darkness to cool her, without much success, she tinkled into the bowl, leaving the door open. Summer needed to surrender to autumn soon; this humidity drove her insane. A storm to release the expectant energy in the air would be most welcome, too.

Il debole bagliore dei lampioni proiettato di fronte a lei avrebbe dovuto impedirle di sbattere un dito contro qualcosa di imprevisto. Jenna, la sua coinquilina, aveva la tendenza a far cadere le cose a terra nello spostarsi in giro, lasciandole esattamente dov’erano cadute.

Source text - English Queen Esther had a secret — a violent, consuming reality pulsing through her veins that kept her up at night. It made every room feel like solitary confinement. If it were exposed, it could end her job, her marriage and even her life.
But slipping into silence was not an option. So after years of torment, Esther went public as a Jew.
When Esther decided to come out to her husband, King Ahasuerus, she wasn’t doing it just for herself. The king’s adviser Haman was planning a genocide of all the Jews in Persia. Haman, while leading their government, had falsely maligned Jews, weaponizing their differences to paint them as immoral.
Esther decided eventually that if the king truly loved her, he would love her as a Jew. And if he loved her as a Jew, he might develop a love for all Jews, or least enough mercy to prevent their slaughter. It was a high-stakes gamble indeed.
I remember making a similar one when I came out to my mother.
Though my mom wasn’t in charge of an empire, she’s definitely the empress of my family. I wagered that when she told me she loved me, she loved all of me, even the parts she couldn’t see. Until she saw my ability to love women, I was never going to fully love myself. So, like Esther, I unzipped my skin and revealed that I was born into a second community that is always under siege.
At its core, the story of Purim is a coming-out story. It’s time we embrace that and use Esther’s tradition of owning who you are to adapt Purim into an LGBTQ-inclusive holiday.
Translation - Italian La regina Ester aveva un segreto, una realtà violenta e totalizzante che le pulsava nelle vene e la teneva sveglia la notte. Le faceva sembrare ogni stanza una cella d’isolamento. Se fosse stato scoperto, le avrebbe potuto far perdere il lavoro, il matrimonio e persino la vita.
Ma scivolare nel silenzio non era accettabile, per cui, dopo anni di tormenti, Ester rivelò di essere ebrea.
Quando Ester decise di fare coming out con suo marito, il re Assuero, non lo stava facendo soltanto per se stessa. Il consigliere del re, Aman, stava pianificando il genocidio di tutti gli ebrei di Persia. Aman, nel guidare il governo, aveva ingiustamente diffamato gli ebrei, rendendo le loro differenze un’arma per poterli tacciare di immoralità.
Ester decise infine che se il re l’amava davvero, l’avrebbe amata anche da ebrea. E se l’amava da ebrea, avrebbe potuto imparare ad amare tutti gli ebrei, o almeno avere la clemenza di impedirne lo sterminio. Era un vero e proprio azzardo.
Ricordo di averne fatto uno simile nel fare coming out con mia madre.
Sebbene mia madre non sia a capo di un impero, è decisamente l’imperatrice della mia famiglia. Ho puntato sul fatto che quando diceva di volermi bene, voleva bene ad ogni parte di me, anche quelle che non poteva vedere. Finché non avesse saputo della mia capacità di amare le donne, non sarei mai stata in grado di amare me stessa fino in fondo, quindi, come ha fatto Ester, ho tolto il velo e ho rivelato di essere nata in una seconda comunità sotto attacco.
Il nocciolo della storia di Purim è un coming out. È arrivata l’ora di riconoscerlo e di usare come esempio la tradizione di Ester di rivendicare la propria identità per trasformare Purim in una festività che includa le persone LGBTQ.

Source text - English COVID-19 has magnified and worsened the deep inequalities that run through our societies. It has also forced people to recognise that our global health and economy are intricately linked.
In order to protect the hard-fought gains made in health, poverty reduction and development over the past 20 years, and get the global economy moving again quickly, the world must come together in action.
Before COVID-19 hit, we were not on track of defeating to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030. There are 38 million people living with HIV, out of whom more than 12 million are still waiting for life-saving treatment.
In 2019, 1.7 million people became newly infected with HIV, and 690,000 people died of AIDS-related illnesses. This is shocking and unacceptable. Our fight is not over – yet it has just become a lot more difficult.
Translation - Italian Il COVID-19 ha amplificato e aggravato le profonde ineguaglianze che solcano le nostre società, così come ha spinto le persone a rendersi conto di quanto la sanità e l’economia globali siano strettamente legate.
Per proteggere le importanti conquiste fatte negli ultimi vent’anni nei campi della sanità e dello sviluppo e nella riduzione della povertà, e per far ripartire velocemente l’economia globale, il mondo deve agire all’unisono.
Prima dell’arrivo del COVID-19, non eravamo certo sulla buona strada per sconfiggere definitivamente l’epidemia di AIDS entro il 2030. Attualmente sono 38 milioni le persone affette dall’HIV, e di queste più di 12 milioni stanno ancora aspettando le cure che possano salvare loro la vita.

Source text - English I think I’ve known I was trans from a young age. I always did, like, dress-up and stuff; most of my friends were girls. I remember at night I used to pray to God to make me a girl. But it never really clicked in my head that this was because I was trans — because I didn’t know how to express my gender identity as such. But in fifth grade, when I finally found out what being transgender was, that’s when I thought: That’s me.
I found out because one of my teammates on my gymnastics team came out to us as transgender. I remember her telling us her coming-out story, and she was like, “If you want to ask me any questions, you can contact me privately.” I contacted her and asked about being transgender.
That’s when I realized, really. Hearing her telling me her story was when I was like, Wow, I am a girl. I am transgender.
Translation - Italian Penso di aver saputo di essere trans fin da piccola. Giocavo sempre a travestirmi o cose del genere, e la maggior parte de* mie* amic* erano ragazze. Ricordo che la sera pregavo Dio di rendermi una ragazza, ma non mi ero mai resa conto che ciò significasse che ero trans, perché non sapevo esprimere la mia identità di genere in questi termini. Quando, in quinta elementare, scoprii finalmente cosa significasse essere transgender, ecco che pensai: Questa sono io.
Lo scoprii perché un membro della mia squadra di ginnastica ci disse di essere transgender. Ricordo che ci raccontò la storia del suo coming out, e poi disse “Se volete farmi qualche domanda, potete contattarmi in privato”. La contattai, e le chiesi di parlarmi dell’essere transgender.
È stato allora che me ne sono davvero resa conto. Nell’ascoltare la sua storia mi sono detta, Wow, sono una ragazza. Sono transgender.
