contenciones devotas

Spanish to English Other Religion
This is a text describing the work of an early 20th-century Uruguayan painter:

Sin falsos miramientos ni dobleces morales, nuestro pintor retrata las pasiones humanas tan fielmente como lo hizo con sus contenciones devotas: desde el recogimiento espiritual hasta el desenfreno insensato, todo pasa por su pincel.

Stuart and Aida Nelson Jun 17, 2019:
Charles Sin falsos miramientos (no false religion) ni dobleces morales (no false moral views), nuestro pintor retrata las pasiones humanas (human passions in general, they are 'diversas y contradictorias') tan fielmente (exactly) como lo hizo con sus contenciones devotas (él mismo tiene esas contradicciones / he himself has this contradictions/disputes within him), desde el recogimiento espiritual (since one/he tries to be a 'good believer') hasta el desenfreno insensato (until one/he stops being a 'good believer' and indulge into these 'pasiones humanas')...Ouch!! This is my interpretation, not set in stone and open for correction :), Cheers, Aida

@ Aida Assuming you are the 'devotee' as opposed to Stuart, I suggest you post 'with his religious self-doubts' and see what others make of it. Meanwhile, whilst in Austria, I will practise no such self-restraint whilst visiting the renowned Aida chain of cake and pastry shops.
Charles Davis Jun 17, 2019:
@Aida Interesting idea! But the context seems to imply (a) that it contrasts with pasiones humanas and (b) that it is associated with recogimiento espiritual.
Stuart and Aida Nelson Jun 17, 2019:
conteciones - controversias/disputas? Yo creo que contenciones quiere decir controversias aquí.

Contención

1. f. Der. Litigio trabado entre partes.
2. f. desus. Contienda, disputa entre varios.

El autor tenía dudas acerca de su religión (devoto), estaba en controversia/disputa consigo mismo con respecto a su religión.

Quizás haya alguna palabra más apropriada pero creo que está es la idea.
Robert Forstag Jun 17, 2019:
The text seems to be contrasting two different classes of the painter’s work: those where he portrayed the human passions unflinchingly and earlier works that were devout and reflective.

Muchísimas gracias, Sir Davis. :-) (No me he leído todo el enlace de San Agustín, pero ya veo el percal...) (Algo me recuerda a la Vida de Brian)
agree Robert Forstag : Aida: The meaning you mention is that which is most commonly used in today’s English. But the term is also used in the sense reflected in John’s translation, and this usage goes back several centuries.

devout self-control

Self-discipline and self-control are associated to religious actions.

The self-discipline religious effect, however, only appears among intrinsic true believers and not among the socially conventional or extrinsically motivated religious.

phases (bouts) of devotional abstinence

Continence has medical echoes of incontinence, whilst the plural ought to be reflected somehow.

Bouts are not only of hard drinking. Phases possibly captures the slight ambiguity of the esteemed artist's own 'continence' and his depictions of such acts or, rather, omissions.
Example sentence:

[ ABSTINENCE PRINCIPLE: A 30-DAY DEVOTIONAL FOR TEENS AND YOUNG ADULTS DEDICATED TO SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINE ] Abstinence Principle: A 30-Day Devotional for Teens and Young Adults Dedicated to Spiritual Discipline

Peer comment(s):

neutral Charles Davis : I don't think Catholics in this context would be in any danger of confusing continence with bladder/bowel control. For that matter, abstinence usually means laying off the booze, and I doubt it's that.

The target-audience may not only be (we) baptised Catholics and legendary Indian (Barrister) Mahatma Gandhi - as his wife would have testified - is not known primarily for his bouts of sobriety.
