El pH es una medida que indica la acidez del agua. El rango varia de 0 a 14, siendo 7 el rango promedio (rango neutral). Un p H menor indica acidez, mientras que un pH mayor a 7, indica que el agua es básica. En realidad, el pH es una medición de la cantidad relativa de iones de hidrógeno e hidróxido en el agua. Si el agua contiene mas iones de hidrógeno tiene una mayor acidez, mientras que agua que contiene mas iones de hidróxido indica un rango básico. El pH se puede ver afectado por la sedimentación atmosférica (o lluvia ácida) provenientes de industrias y transporte, los vertidos de aguas residuales, los drenajes de las minas y el tipo de rocas que forman el lecho de la masa de agua estudiada.
