Благодаря своей неукротимой способности к размножению, олива стала символом долголетия: если после пожара от дерева остался хоть небольшой кусочек (кроме листьев), то уже через несколько дней он даст новые ростки.

: may be propagation ability, Jack? I guess 'capacity' is too "chunky" :)

Propagation ability and capacity are used about equally. I just picked one over the other arbitarily.

amazing ability to reproduce
предлагаю более "мягкий" вариант, хотя все предыдущие правильные, но это все же не научный текст

is apt to the insuppressible reproduction
Дело в том, что оливковое дерево размножается обоими известными природе способами(не мытьем, так катанием...).
Но я согласна с коллегой в том, что текст, видимо, не научного характера. Иначе можно было бы уточнить:
either vegetative or sexual way.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&d...
The inheritance of mitochondrial and chloroplast genomes does not follow Mendelian laws, but proceeds by vegetative segregation. Most organisms show organelle homoplasmy, which is probably produced and maintained during sexual reproduction. We have tested the effect of prolonged vegetative multiplication in the maintenance of mitochondrial homoplasmy and the generation of heteroplasmy in cultivated olive trees, Olea europaea L. Seven trees, each representing a different variety of olive, were analysed by the study of an intergenic spacer region of the mitochondrial genome.
Therefore, this work supports the relevance of the role of sexual reproduction in the maintenance of mitochondrial homoplasmy and also shows that mutations accumulate in a non-coding sequence of the mitochondrial genome when vegetative propagation is maintained for a long period of time
http://aob.oupjournals.org/cgi/content/full/mch079?ijkey=27p...
Olive (Olea europaea) is andromonoecious, i.e. individual trees bear both hermaphrodite and staminate flowers. Hermaphrodite flowers consist of a small, greenish calyx, four white petals, two stamens with large anthers, and a pistil composed of a bilobulate stigma, a short style and a bilocular ovary with four ovules. Staminate flowers result from pistil abortion at varying stages of gynoecium differentiation and possess a non-functional, rudimentary pistil. Although self-fertilization is not totally precluded, cross-pollination results in earlier and greater levels of fertilization (Cuevas, 1992)
Hence, the high variation observed in olive in the proportion of staminate flowers among years, trees, branches, shoots and even inflorescences in the same shoot (Brooks, 1948) may be part of an overall reproductive strategy that adjusts maternal investment in sex expression in response to available resources and environmental conditions.

: Dorene, the synonym for "fecundity" is "fertility", isn't it? I don't think it's the case here
