French term

bimbeloterie

French to English Other Music
about a tango musician:
"...le tango n'a rien à voir avec la bimbeloterie du bal musette européen"

would the meaning here be conveyed by "knick-knack" ?
any ideas?

trivial flashiness

Assuming the text is about tango, and not bal musette.
Peer comment(s):

agree Tony M : I rather think this is about superfluous ornamentation

agree David Goward : a good option. Also like Dusty's "superfluous ornamentation". Probably lots of other possibilities of describing something that's "showy but basically pointless".

agree Nick Lingris : But more so with Dusty's 'superfluous ornamentation'.

rhythmic intricacies

Just one suggestion. Others might do: friskiness, perhaps. Playfulness.

- they had no difficulty adapting it to the rhythmic intricacies of bop
- The nine pieces in this suite pay mischievous homage to the rhythmic intricacies of popular dance forms
Peer comment(s):

agree John Peterson : friskiness sounds good; maybe fanciness as well

Yes, as I've said to Dusty, 'intricacies' may be on the flattering side.
neutral Tony M : Not too sure, Nick! One of the features of 'musette' is that it is fundamentally dead simple (has to be, for dancing by drunken peasants!), but is covered with useless 'twiddly-bits' to make the musicians seem clever

'Intricacies' is perhaps too flattering.

I have played tangos in bal musette bands and it is a depressing experience. There is a sort of holiday camp militarism in the way it is played, and a rigidity in the rhythm which is a far cry from the sensuality and passion of the original. Also one would hardly call it flashy!!

tawdriness/gaudiness

Depends on how you feel about the dances....This might work if you consider the tango more refined and the bal musette rather vulgar.
(ie cheap knick -knacks)
