Spanish to English Law/Patents Law: Contract(s)

I understand the Spanish perfectly but the sentence doesn't appear to make sense, at least not to me:

La responsabilidad de XXX derivada de este Contrato quedará limitada a la suma de todas las cantidades abonadas por el Cliente durante los últimos seis (6) meses precedentes a la producción del evento causante del daño, tanto para cada incidente como para la suma de todos los incidentes acaecidos en dicho período.

Now, if for example a damaging event occurs on July 1st, then XXX company will basically not pay more than what the Client has already paid during the previous six-month period - i.e. since Jan 1st. How can there be more than one damaging event in this period unless of course a number of damaging events all occur on July 1! If for example there had been another event in March, then the period for calculating XXX's liability would be different (the six-month period up until March, which is a different period)!

I suppose it could mean that if the Client fails to make any claim for compensation for an event and then another one occurs, then compensation for both events will only amount to the six-month period preceding the second event, which is a very round-about way of saying that the Client really should claim compensation immediately after an event occurs... phew!

I'm probably missing something incredibly obvious!
