Discussion

David Vaughn Dec 28, 2005:
Claudia, this is simply not un klaxon. In the context of music, even on an everyday level, a horn is a brass instrument - horn is actually more everyday than brass. Jazz & soul musicians blow horns, not brass. Votre phrase ne doit pas "klaxonner".
Claudia LEDUC (asker) Dec 28, 2005:
Other answer as good : accent aux cuivres Celle-ci est plus spcialise en musicologie quoique plus argotique.

I don't know whether you're looking for a definition, as well as a translation. If not, my apologies :-)

I don't really know how to translate it concisely, but maybe the definition will help you. I couldn't just leave you with "coups de corne" ;-)

"The Horns
The biggest influence on harmonica players are horn players, especially saxophone players. Though sax players can play any note combination they wish, their lines are commonly approachable on the harmonica. Ideas borrowed from sax players can be fresh material for the over-used standard blues harmonica licks that we normally play. It sure worked for Little Walter!

We learned that horn lines could be approached in two ways. The first approach is playing vertical lines based on chord tones. These are commonly horn punches (one to two note repetitive patterns that change slightly to match chord change). The second approach is playing horizontal lines. These are longer lines (commonly one to two measures in length) that repeat over the entire 12 bar blues progression, commonly with no change (though not uncommon to change a note or two to match chord change)."

Horn is a synonym for the brass instruments.
Punch is possibly used in the sense of mixing to mean to insert a short sample or bit of recorded music/sound.

neutral David Vaughn : I agree this is a possibility, though I'd argue that here we're talking about a particular variety of "riff". The French expression has the same meaning as its English origin, so a riff can be a long phrase, compared to a "punch" - which implies function

disagree Paul Hirsh : punch is just one note or chord, riffs are melodic cells/figures

horn c'est un peu argotique pour inclure tous instruments a vent. Dans les repetitions on a tendance a dire "accents" pour ces "coups" meme si officiellement ca ne veut dire qu'une note marquee par le signe >
