Discussion

Davorka Grgic (asker) Jan 8, 2006:
Thanks for the reference, Robert.
Rosa Maria Duenas Rios (X) Jan 8, 2006:
I have no problem with her question. However, the term is arabic, not Spanish, even if it is in a Spanish text. To me,it has more logic to post in the Arabic-English pair where, chances are, colleagues would be better able to help her.But you already did!
Robert Forstag Jan 8, 2006:
I see your point Rosa Maria, but all Davorka is asking for is how to transliterate an Arabic term that is in common use in both languages. Therefore, I think it permissible for her to post it as a Spanish-to-English inquiry. :-)
Davorka Grgic (asker) Jan 8, 2006:
I guess not. This is a text in Spanish.
Rosa Maria Duenas Rios (X) Jan 8, 2006:
Shouldn't the question be in the Arabic-English pair?

shahid

If the intended term is Arabic word for "martyr", then it would be written like this in English transliteration.

From: http://www.hsje.org/palestinian_children_yearning_ma.htm

>From the PA media and education the apparent answer is that the children are pushed by their parents, teachers, friends and the education they receive in the Palestinian Authority schools glorifying death as Martyrs ["Shahid" death for Allah] as a supreme virtue. As the number of those killed rises, the Palestinian media extols and exalts not only those killed, but also their willingness to die as Martyrs for Allah, emphasizing that dying a Martyr's death was the realization of their hopes. By examining closely what the children and their parents are saying it is likely that there are young children who are going directly to areas of conflict with th e clear goal of endangering their lives, in order to their please their parents, friends, and teachers.
