The United States dollar (currency code USD) is the currency of the United States since 1785. It is normally abbreviated with the dollar sign $, or alternatively US$ to distinguish it from other dollar-denominated currencies.

agree Jennifer Levey : Exactly - it depends on context. If the document uses 'CRC' for the Costa Rican colon, then use 'USD' for the US dollar, to be consistent; otherwise use 'US$'

En base a mi larga experiencia de trabajo en banca te puedo asegurar que se escribe de esta manera debido, entre otras cosas, a que figura así en todos los sistemas informáticos que procesan las operaciones de divisas, tanto en los mercados monetarios como en los medios de pagos internacionales.

This is how I've always seen it here in the U.S. US$ looks strange to me, but maybe it's used elsewhere.
