Discussion

Jane Luther Apr 28, 2006:
I'm with Brie and writeaway on this. If it's any help, my "Baedeker's Vienna" calls these inns "Heurige", too.
Rita Banati (asker) Apr 28, 2006:
There ist no context, sorry...
itla Apr 28, 2006:
http://www.ostarrichi.org/wort-1754-at-Heuriger.html > Can it be this year's wine from your context?
Brie Vernier Apr 28, 2006:
If it's a proper name, it doesn't get translated. If it isn't, please provide context.

wine tavern

Some of these are rather informal places, but I think wine tavern conveys the idea.
Peer comment(s):

neutral writeaway : the Heuriger are so much part of a trip to Vienna, I wouldn't translate it at all. maybe explain -but who is this text for?

neutral Natalie Wilcock (X) : with writeaway

agree ottonicolai : wine tavern describes the Austrian term very well. I would mention Heuriger though and in brackets wine tavern
18 mins
agree BrigitteHilgner : I think wine tavern is quite suitable. Such taverns are slightly different in all countries - I assume that most people reading about Vienna realise this.
31 mins
neutral Alison Jenner : with writeaway & Nathalie - don't translate, and put an explanation in
54 mins
agree Andras Malatinszky : Maybe call it "Heuriger wine tavern" as in "No trip to Vienna is complete without a visit to a Heuriger wine tavern in Grinzing."

agree doctor_suz : with Andras; really smooth solution

agree Ingeborg Gowans (X) : w/Ebrehardvon Pogrell et Cie: it is often a Gartenlokal, and tavern doesn't quite cut it for my tast. I would go with wine restaurant
6 hrs
neutral Brigitte Albert (X) : with writeaway, Nathalie and Alison: leave Heuriger and explain the term briefly

Peer comment(s):

disagree writeaway : a dictionary definition doesn't work here and Eberhard explained the origin of the word in a peer agree. here you can see what a Heuriger is: http://www.heuriger.co.at/steinklammer/index.htm
36 mins
disagree Ian M-H (X) : with writeaway: "this year's" certainly doesn't work for "Heuriger" here and this answer gives no new or helpful information. Confidence 5???
