Spanish term

despeje

Spanish to English Other
In talks between a Lat. Amer. government and a paramilitary group, there is agreement to extend the "despeje".
I assume it refers to an area where hostilities are to be stopped during the talks, but... does anyone know of a standard way to say it?

demilitarized / demobilized zone

I am certain of this one. This is referring to the area in Colombia that the government yielded to the guerrilla (FARC). Their time i the area and the peace talks were due to expire a little over a week ago, and it was extended pending some new terms.

Good luck!

The peace talks are between the Government (whose law enforcement branch is the military) and the guerrilla (FARC). One of the points of contention is that the paramilitaries have not been included in the talks.

agree Parrot : the FARC was precisely my doubt, they don't demilitarize.

Yes, the military are the ones who demilitarized!
disagree two2tango : "despeje zone" has 48 hits in this context, "clearance zone" has 33, "demobilized zone" has just 3.

I got 17 the first time. If you do "demobilization" and "FARC" you get 328. "demobilization area" and "Farc" gives another 14. In any case, people here in Colombia do use both terms. :)

demilitarized zone

"zona de despeje". Actually, this is standard Geneva vocabulary and the reality happens, for example, between North and South Korea, but I doubt whether you can use the term for South American paramilitary groups.
