Tiene unas indicaciones muy concretas, por ello no puede generalizarse su realización a todos los casos.

Permite obtener, prácticamente sin molestias para la paciente, una muestra válida para establecer un diagnóstico correcto y determinar factores que influirán en el tratamiento a seguir y potencial pronóstico. Se realiza de forma ambulatoria, con anestesia local y realizando un incisión de 2 mm, el tiempo es aproximadamente 30 minutos y sin tiempo de convalecencia. Se obtienen muestras de zonas de difícil acceso.

INDICATIONS FOR CORE BIOPSY
When considering nonpalpable breast lesions, the criteria for selection of patients for core breast biopsy is generally the same as that for open, surgical breast biopsy. In addition, since core biopsy is less traumatic and approaches the same accuracy as surgical biopsy, patients with less suspicious lesions can also be considered if radiologist or patient anxiety is high. These less suspicious lesions can be core biopsied immediately to insure benignancy, rather than having the patient undergo short interval follow-up over the ensuing two years. Less suspicious lesions shown not to be cystic on ultrasound, less suspicious clustered microcalcifications, and questionable regions of asymmetry are all eligible for consideration for core biopsy.
STEREOTACTIC CORE BREAST BIOPSY a replacement for surgical breast biopsy.
Any lesion that can be seen by mammography can be accurately biopsied with the Mammotest Stereotactic core breast biopsy. The accuracy of the procedure depends upon highly developed mammography skills and is, consequently, an advance radiology procedure. Accuracy is equal to or greater than accuracy with traditional localisation and open, surgical breast biopsy..
Stereotactic core breast biopsy has significant additional advantages: no surgical scar results from the biopsy and no mammographic deformity is left within the breast to confuse future mammography interpretation. If the patient does not have breast cancer and a Stereotactic core biopsy is performed, she will be spared one breast surgery. If the patient does have breast cancer and Stereotactic core biopsy was performed she will be spared the additional surgery of the initial diagnostic biopsy. Furthermore, when a breast cancer is identified by Stereotactic core biopsy and definitive breast surgery is performed for local cancer control, the surgeon has a much easier surgical field of operation. The surgeon does not have to operate on the distorted cavity created by a previous open, surgical biopsy.
