Russian to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
Review of the film The Island

The sentence starts 'V svoem glazy otets Anatoly brevno opredelenno zamechaet..', which Jack Doughty has kindly explained is a biblical quote. I can't make full sense of this second bit.

but he will always find a heavy log in the eyes of anyone around him...

The idea is that the Father Anatoly certainly sees a beem in his own eye, but as well as he's inclined to notice anything sinful in other people and when he does he is ruthless.

"увесистое полено" is a heavy log (allusion with the Biblical beam)

"со всей дури" = "изо всех сил"

"треснет" = "ударит"

...but he does find a heavy log in the eye of another and is sure to strike at it

This is to emphasize that he doesn't just notice a "speck", i.e. a minor fault, but something major to rebuke in those around him.

however he is sure to find a weighty log in everybody else's eye and smash them with it

It seems reasonable to put it in Russian as emphatically as in English. The author is obviously painting this as a negative quality in him.
