Solitude and Loneliness. It's the title of a book. In dictionaries I found both translated as Soledad, but the idea is that Solitude represents to be alone by choice, while loneliness is to be alone as a result of being abandoned or rejected. I need something snappy that clearly conveys both ideas, as the title of the Spanish version.

: I understand the words as you do. I would say that "solitude" is "situational" while "loneliness" is an attitude. Apparently the source text gives "crossed explanations".

"Solitude" se usa más para una soledad física (aislamiento, como propuso una colega), aunque puede no ser por propia elección.
En castellano tal vez diríamos "(ser) solitario y (sentirse o estar) solo".

recogimiento y soledad
Tienes razón que en castellano son difíciles de diferenciar. Recogimiento yo lo entiendo bastante como una elección, y soledad la verdad es que puede entenderse como por elección o impuesta, pero tal vez esto sea lo que más se acerca al doble sentido en inglés. Muy poético. Suerte!
