This could also be a "breather," such as a long rest.
Many times the real answer or meaning for which we seek only comes after re-reading and studying the text. Without knowing the full context here, it's not really possible. A "deep breath of relief" doesn't make a lot of sense. We also do not know who is promising! It could be "I promised myself a long breather (or break) after the rush," for example. Since it is a literary piece, I would always go for something less literal!
