"mémoire"for me means the person who has been there so long he can remember the history of the place, he is his own filing system, you ask him anything and he should know.
He is therefore the guardian of its history

I should have aded that to say that using the word "memory" in English somehow doesn't work for me

: I think backbone is great - but would prefer the literal 'memory' for "mémoire"//Hmm.. you do find 'he is the memory' on google, but I also saw "memory keeper"... how does that grab you?

I thought long and hard about "memory" but found it "too French"//Whence guardian (of the history of)

: I agree with Katsy - can you repost an answer with 'memory and backbone'? I think that'd clinch it!

: What do you think of 'embodies the institutional memory and is the backbone of the company' (too long, perhaps)?

: (comment, not a "neutral" scoring): memory and backbone sounds a bit blood'n'guts to me. Would need to clarify guardian *of the history* as you say, too/x post with Grace, that's not bad!

: "key figure and mainstay of the company" perhaps?

I like mainstay but you need the idea of "mémoire". "Mainstay of the company, embodying its history"? I'll share the points ;)

The head of the society who is the strength and will remain in the memory

Irene McClure
: i think this misses the point of the phrase - the director embodies the 'memory' of the organisation
