E' corretto in questo contesto il termine "asse a gomito"? Qui "axle" non potrebbe essere inteso come "albero"? Non ho mai incontrato questo termine in inglese e mi sta un po' disorientando...

Il fatto che il testo di partenza sia a sua volta una traduzione da chissà quale lingua, mi fa pensare che "crank axle" sia un'infelice traduzione dell'albero a gomiti |

se il tuo contesto è auto, scarterei sia asse a gomito (treni) che asse della manovella (bici). Guardando vari siti su Audi e le foto di Google penso sia quello che ho indicato sopra.

secondo me è come dici te, "albero a gomiti", l'unico crank che conosco è quello. ma forse tu parli di locomotive, in quel caso la risposta te la metto sotto!!!
