More context Entsprechendes gilt auch für die früher gebräuchlichen Steckbettchen, in denen die Babys in weitgehend gestreckter Haltung lagen. Leider gehören derartige ungeeignete Betreuungsgepflogenheiten nicht der Vergangenheit an, wie Bilder aus Säuglingsstationen vor allem osteuropäischer Krankenhäusern belegen. Eingewickelt in Tücher, kaum zur Bewegung fähig, sind Babys im Vergleich zu anderen zwar ruhiger, doch der Preis hierfür ist eine ansteigende Zahl von Dysplasien.

Paula - can you tell from the text what era is being referred to here? I think that will help us work out whether it's the quilted-sleeping-bag (I don't think it is) or whether it's swaddling, or strapping the baby to a board...

I picked up on Antje's answer about the Steckbettchen/Steckkissen and found this sleeping bag (and others):

You're right, cradle boards/papooses are just ONE form of swaddling.

A "Steckbettchen" or "Steckkissen" is a kind of sleeping bag where the baby is tugged in tightly - not easy to describe...

agree Silvia Autenrieth : Exactly. No, definitely no typo involved. This type of "sleeping bag" was even used to hang the baby on the wall while the mother/caretaker took care of her household chores .... But I have no idea whether there was an English equivalent.
