This sentence is obviously far too long. I want to make into 2 shorter sentences, but I am not 100% sure of the significance of this phrase
Ya que el método utilizado para la determinación de la PCT es el mismo en ambos estudios, las diferencias entre ambos podrían explicarse, en el caso de la sensibilidad (30 de los 45 pacientes con derrame PAR superaban el valor de corte en su estudio, por 16 de los 31 en el nuestro), por el alto número de pacientes de su serie con una neumonía grave (18 en clase IV-V del índice de severidad de neumonía (pneumonia severity index –PSI-)), **que son los que presentan una PPCT más elevada**, con una mortalidad del 13.3%, mientras que, en la nuestra, aunque no se tuvo en cuenta el PSI, al no haber ningún fallecimiento, podríamos asumir que la gravedad de nuestros casos fue menor.

What I am not sure about is how to accurately translate the small phrase between the asterisks.
