English term

fail prior x therapy demonstrated improvement

English to French Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals Summary of a treatment for cancer patients
Here is the passage in which I believe there must be an error:• A Phase 3 randomized trial comparing gemcitabine in combination with paclitaxel to paclitaxel alone as first-line therapy in patients with locally recurrent or metastatic breast cancer who failed prior anthracycline-containing adjuvant chemotherapy demonstrated a significant improvement in overall survival for those patients treated with the combination of gemcitabine and paclitaxel as compared to those treated with paclitaxel alone.

Discussion

SJLD Apr 30, 2009:
yes - it's confusing Strictly speaking it wouldn't be first-line therapy for patients who have already had chemo. However, here it means treatment of first choice for these particular patients. All pharmaceutical companies like to think their product is first-line ;-)
In other words, first line treatment of recurrent or metastatic disease

marie-christine périé Apr 30, 2009:
Now I have a doubt I just read the sentence again and now I agree there must be an error. The trial is comparing G + P to P alone as first-line therapy in patients who failed prior chemotherapy???
Janet Ratziu Apr 29, 2009:
It reads fine I agree with SJLD, there is no error.
Muriel FINETIN Apr 29, 2009:
When Patients Fail Treatment... Effectivement nous avons deux options possibles :
soit un traitement s'est avéré efficace (The treatment was considered successful) soit il ne l'a pas été et les patients ont alors besoin d'une autre thérapie (Patients are considered to fail the treatment and require another therapy)"

Exemple : http://www.chestjournal.org/content/early/2007/10/01/chest.0...
SJLD Apr 29, 2009:
there is no error the patients in the trial were those who had already been treated with anthracycline-containing adjuvant chemotherapy but failed to respond

chopped up difefrently maybe:

A Phase 3 randomized trial comparing gemcitabine in combination with paclitaxel
to paclitaxel alone
as first-line therapy in patients with locally recurrent or metastatic breast cancer
who failed prior anthracycline-containing adjuvant chemotherapy
demonstrated a significant improvement in overall survival
for those patients treated with the combination of gemcitabine and paclitaxel as compared to those treated with paclitaxel alone.

(patients) en échec à une chimiothérapie antérieure...

..., (l'étude) a démontré.....
