About the boring of a tunnel to extend a metro line beyond its current terminus: "Pour réaliser les xx mètres de tunnels qui permettront de franchir le périphérique, la technique de pré découpage mécanique a été retenue. I'd really need to know more. It appears to be the erection shaft or assembly shaft, as below.

But it could be the mucking out shaft, i.e. a shaft that serves both to erect the TBM and remove excavated material subsequently. From my notes:

puits de travail mucking-out shaft; working (or drive) shafts (in the case of pipe jacking) [TTI,4.2001,p.23]

At all events, it is likely to be the starter shaft, since the TBM is most likely to start its drive from the point where it is erected.

This covers a multitude of uses. As this is an extension most of the other shafts will be unavailable so this 'main shaft' can serve both to supply the work in progress and remove debris.
