Spanish term

soportes de informacion

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general) Source text from Spain
This is a law that regulates biomedical research and defines what is patient information and what it means to protect that information. Here is the sentence in question:

La indicación sobre la aplicación supletoria de esta ley a las materias reguladas en la LIB es de gran importancia, puesto que las muestras biológicas no son datos en sí mismas, sino “soportes de información”.

Thank you for your help.

Discussion

Myriam S (asker) Jun 12, 2009:
I need the exact words used in the biomedical filed and cannot use a description of the terms. Therefore, I have done some more research and found the answer, which is "information carrier or carriers." For those of you who are interested, or for future reference, for more information you can read this report: http://archive.eurostemcell.org/Documents/Ethics/Panel2.pdf

(laboratory/biological) evidence

In the same sense as physical objects introduced as evidence in a court case.

But not "supporting evidence," because in medicine supporting evidence could be clinical symptoms, epidemiological history, etc.

A sample alone means nothing. It only becomes meaningful when it is studied and interpreted, resulting in a diagnosis. The resulting diagnosis ibecomes the data.
